had a virus filled add aware filled computer dropped off at my house to see if I could fix it because it would no longer boot,. He did not bring the mouse or keyboard with it. I figured no big deal and plugged in my PS mouse and keyboard. System recognized the right away and I was off to cleaning land. Cleared out a bunch of stuff and took it back to him.

Tonight he calls and says he cant get the mouse or keyboard to work both are USB. They are wireless and came with the Dell XPS computer. He is brining it back tomorrow for me to get it running. I did not uninstall anything. I just plugged in my old mouse and keyboard the sytem noticed and asked to install the software. I let it so I could use the wheel on the mouse.

Any hints or a easy way to get them working again.

Did he plug the USB wireless adapter in the same USB port he had it plugged into before and if he's unsure did he wait a little bit on first boot? Even wired USB KB/mice take a little bit when booted the first time. So far all of the USB wireless KB/mouse combos I've used will install fine in XP without having to install drivers but maybe his is different.

if it was that infected, a file or two for the wireless mouse and KB could have been infected and then removed when you cleaned. I'd just wiped the system and reloaded it if it is that bad off, that way no issues of corrupted or missing files or drivers.

As Robisbell says. That would be preferable.

Or, just buy him a usb to ps2 adaptor for a $ or 2.

Will that work? Most USB Mouse keyboard combos have a reciver with one usb cord.

Dammit I'm going blind and senile.

Read and re-read the op, and just saw 'wireless'.
Scratch my idea and go for Robisbell.

Just going to go and bump my head against something that won't break.

Sometimes it helps to enter BIOS, and just choose Save and exit. This does of course assume that the wireless devices work at startup, but they normally do.
