Easy MS Word question.... Pls help!

Whenever I click on a word and want to Insert a letter or text my MS Word inserts the new letter or text OVER the old word or letter in effect deleting the old word instead of just adding the new text....

Why is this? and How do I turn it OFF!!!!!!!
