Easy CD Creator problem

It won't let me burn the CD. Keeps saying, "This program is unable to use your CD-Recorder because it is currently being used by Adaptec DirectCD Kernal". I don't see any kernal process listed in the Task Mgr but I know some processes don't show up there.

I just got my $99 Zip Iomega (=Plextor) 12x10x32 burner installed.

What stupid thing am I doing or not doing?

I will mention your name favorably in the local taverns if you can help me :)

I just ran the System Test (tools menu) and it said the same thing:(

First of all, make sure your software is up to date - at least v4.02 from Roxio's (Adaptec's) website.

Secondly, do not allow DirectCD to load at start-up (remove it from startup). Also, do not first access Direct CD and then EZ CD Creator.

If all else fails, try Nero.

You can upgrade your ECDC 4 to 4.03a now at the Roxio site . . . that adds some newer burners. I suspect the problem is the Iomega burner . . . that is sort of par for the Iomega course. :)

The version I have is 4.02d and came with the drive that was delivered yesterday. The sticker says the drive was manufactured in Jan 2001.

I've already stopped any CD apps from running at startup (Startup Control Panel).

I start the program from the Programs->Iomega menu. Easy CD Creator is the program that is activated first.

And yes, I have pretty much decided, from reading these forums, that Nero is what I'll use. But I wanted to test everything with the OEM software before I flashed and switched to Nero.

Thanks for those tips apoppin. Any other ideas?

corky-g you may be right. I just checked the Roxio site and they indicate that ver 4.02e Easy CD Creator is needed to support the Iomega 12x10x32 drive. I'll give a newer ver a try and report back. I'm surprised that with all the folks getting this 'hot deal' someone else hasn't reported this problem. I mean, crimony!, to ship software with the drive that doesn't support it!?

EDIT

Well, here is the place to get the latest Easy CD Creator version or the one that you need for your particular OS/drive combo.

I had a conflict between EZ CD Creator and Direct CD that was so bad I had to uninstall Direct CD so that EZ would work. It was later fixed with an Adaptec driver update.

Perhaps you had a bad install of EZ CD Creator. You might consider an uninstall and reinstall (not putting Direct CD on at all). At least try uninstalling Direct CD.

As far as outdated software shipped with a product - that is just par for the course. My Kodak Web Cam shipped with outdated drivers (BIG difference using the latest from their web site).

Well, I uninstalled DirectCD, rebooted and I get a little further. Now it stops during the process and says to put in a CD with sufficient room. Well, my CD is an empty 700MB disk and I'm only trying to transfer 110MB. I guess this is a fight every step of the way:(

Finally got it to record. Guess it just requires a new CD after every aborted attempt. Even though it indicated no data transferred the first time when I switched CDs everything went smooth.

Oh well, I needed another coaster since AOL quit sending them every week:)

mariner....and you felt the urge to install Acraptec because....???

Over my advice? How dare you!!!! :) I guess this'll learn ya.

Yeah, I know the theory....try the software they send. Hey, if I'd done that with my 12x4x32 Plex SCSI and my g/f's 12x10x32 burnproof Plex burner, I would have had Acraptec 3.**. And, that ain't good. I was amazed that Plex would ship that old stuff.

Hey, least you're getting good advice. apoppin and corky-g know what they are talking about.

OH....BTW...welcome to the wonderful world of troubleshooting burner problems. It'll make a man out of ya. or....a blithering idiot.

corky-g....anything happening on the Winbook forum?

Well, thanks to apoppin and corky-g I got it working. And no thanks to you randypj! If you had just thrown something other than words at me maybe this could have been avoided;) Soon as I get a big stack of CDRs I'm off to the library to check out some CDs:)
