East India Company

I was browsing for games at Best Buy while my wife was getting her hair cut and came across East India Company. It looks pretty interesting and the description on the box reminded me of Port Royale 2 which is a game that I really enjoyed playing for quite a while. Has anyone here played both of these games (or just East India Company) and give me a bit of a review before I go out and plunk down 30 bucks?

I played it for about 6 hours and then got bored of it and went back to playing Sid Meier's Pirates!

The game is really well made - it looks great and all it's features work well but the problem is the scope of the game is extremely limited.

The world map you play on in the strategic level is pretty low detail - you only can sail your ships on the sea and interact with other ships and port cities. You build ships which only require gold (no resource model for ship production) and you only have about 10 choices I think it was in ship types. Then what you are supposed to do is buy export good your home port produces and sell them to some foreign port (though you may not trade with ports owned by other countries [which is weird] and typically of course the farther the port the higher the prices you get). Then you buy other goods those foreign ports which give most profit and bring them home. There are some unique trade goods that only ports around India and Africa produce and this is what the game centers around - getting access to this goods and bringing them home for huge profits. You can also battle other country's warships and just steal their cargo/sink their ships too.

While this is all well and good that's really the whole game. It's quite simplistic. The naval battles jumps to a special tactical battle screen but there's not much to it and its painfully slow - I kinda prefer to let these battles resolve automatically instead of going through them.

I only played the demo and what looked like an exciting and deep game turned out to be repetitive and rather simplistic.
