East Coast Gaming Cons

Modeps

Lifer
Hey, now that E3 is over, even though it wasnt great, the bug has caught me and I'd like to try and attend a gaming con without getting in a plane. When E3 was huge, and before I was married with a kid, I always had an idea that I'd go to E3... now, that seems less likely.

I'm guessing that my best bet would be in either Boston or New York... I found this one through EGM, but it doesnt look devoted to games.

Any suggestions, or desire to go to any? Possibly a meet up at one of these events?

Digital life is very bleh. More blackberries than video games, and the few games they do show are ones that are basically already out.

Theres no decent gaming con to go to in this area. Hell, with E3 the way it is, theres no decent gaming con in this country.

I've been to only one E3, and it was a spectacle beyond nearly anything I've ever seen. Being there was practically like being in a video game. Too bad its gone.

As said, Digital Life is more of a tech trade show, not really for games.

The only thing I can think of is the NY ComicCon, though that is mainly comics (and games based on comics).

And BD is wrong - PAX has replaced E3 - though it took away much of the trade-show/press elements like big press conferences and whatnot, and upped the gamer appeal instead.

I remember going to a conference at Javits a while ago, I don't even remember the name but what you're describing makes me almost think I went to Digital Life before... which makes me laugh (because I dont even remember its name). It was boring, not much there at all.

If there's nothing east coast, then I suggest one of you create a new gaming con over here and I'll help be an advisor or something 😉 For some reason I thought PAX was east coast, but then I looked and saw it was Washington state.

Well you could always drive to PAX. 🙂

I always wanted to check out E3 too. I went to E for All last year because I happened to be in LA that weekend. It was very meh, and I'm skipping it this year. Nintendo basically owned the show. Guitar Hero was on display just about everywhere, there were literally like 50 stations throughout the place. Rock Band was there too which was pretty cool. They setup a stage and had people going up and playing for everyone to watch. I'd love to hit PAX but none of my friends are interested in going with me so I'll probably skip it.

I'm not a fan of Penny Arcade, but it does seem like PAX is the show to go to right now. To fly there, it looks like at least $400 + hotel + food... so that's probably about a $1k trip minimum. I don't have the time to drive cross country... maybe if I wasn't married.

Why are east coasters given the shaft? 🙁

The video game industry is in the west coast.

The east coast (mainly NYC) has a ton of web dev conferences, fashion conferences, and modern art events.

These things were first and foremost press/media events, and since the media generally crowds around the area where the industry is - they had the events close by.

It was more a rhetorical question 😉

East cost is blah overall for the game industry. E3 just sucks now, the few I went too were great, we treated them like get aways to go see friends from other studios we dont get to see often and to play lots of games, and show off a bit of what we were working on 🙂

GDC is my fav show though but it is slowly going down hill as they are trying to cater it more to the gamers now with annoucements that really isnt for those of us attending the conference to start with.

If you ever get the chance, go to TGS, A LOT o fun there. Been once and man it was fantastic, it was like E3 but without a lot of the talk and a sprinkle of Japanese crazyness to it.

Yeah, if I don't want to fly to the West Coast, chances are I'm not going to fly to Tokyo. 🙂

Cool. I'll have a much easier time convincing my friend to go when I don't have to get them to buy a plane ticket too. I still might go to PAX this year, I'm kind of on the fence about it. I figure I'll see what's going on that weekend and go from there.
