East Coast day trip ideas

My friend and I are going to take two days off and go somewhere. I live in the DC area. I would like to take her somewhere and do the outdoorsy thing but I'm not limiting it to that. NYC might be an option. Anyone have any good ideas? Philly? Dewey?

if you're into outdoors drive up to killington, you can rent bikes and take the ski lift to the top in the summers and cycle down.

How about Boston? Its a great place to visit plus you can see the whole city in a day by walking around.

Only problem is that its about 9 hours to drive from DC.

Assateague is cool. Camping on the beach with the ponys is a cool trip.

Actually, I might be going there for Mem Day weekend to see some friends. That would be a crappy two day trip though.
