A little rant/background: I owe my old roommate some money and apparently it is difficult to get it to him. He is in another state temporarily to work and so doesn't have a bank account local to there. He suggested a money order from Walmart since it was cheap and he did that to pay someone else. So I went to Walmart, asked the lady if another Walmart would cash it, she said yes as long as the person I send it to signs it, not me, and puts payable to Walmart (otherwise is 2nd or 3rd party thing and they won't).

A blank money order in the mail ain't good, but he got it, went to Walmart who told him they don't cash that, after he already wrote payable to Walmart on it. Nice, that money order is now worthless.

I took the stub and Walmart receipt back to tell them what they told me is not true and that I want a refund. They won't give me one. And they also can't know if it's been cashed or not. I figured that is BS and now know it is, since they have an automated phone number just for that purpose. What pissed me off was she just sat there, didn't want to do a damn thing, and expected me to just eat $120.

He is going to send the money order back as it does him no good since it's made out to Walmart and can't be changed, yet can't be cashed at Walmart. Then I'll try and get a refund from Walmart again. If not, I think I can get it from Moneygram which is gonna cost $12, 30-60 days, and a pain in the ass in general.

And so I still owe my friend. What's a good way to do it? After sending a blank money order, may as well have sent cash, but I don't want to be out another $120 if they fuck me around on the refund.

What the hell, WalMart told you to make the money order payable to them so they could give him the cash? - I diddn't know they had money orders.

Whats wrong with a Western Union money order or USPS money order ( I think you can cash them at any post office or bank + ID )?

USPS money order ftw. Make payment to him so he can cash it at his bank.

Yeah they partnered with Moneygram to have their money orders, for the Walmarts that don't have like a full bank type thing inside. Moneygram is unfortunate since any searching on the web leads to hundreds of posts by people who got scammed, some who lost thousands and such (contacted by someone in the UK, with Nigeria being the place to send/receive money order, for fucks sakes people). Some posts say that Walmart and other retailers cash them, will another says they don't in his state. The one here supposedly does it, but the one my friend went to in another state doesn't. Real nice policy to offer their money orders but not have every store cash them. Even store credit on a Walmart card or something would be ok for him.

Oh, I didn't even know that there were USPS money orders! What a PITA this has been, when a USPS one would be perfect: get the money order and a stamped envelope quickly and at one place!
