Easiest way to retain data w/ new hard drive?

I currently have an IBM 45 gig with windows XP but I just installed a Maxtor 80 gb right now that's operating as slave. Whats the easiest way to transfer all contents of the IBM to the Maxtor so that they can be switched and windows/programs/files will still function perfectly.


The reason I want to do this is because the Maxtor better performs and the IBM is on the verge of death

If it was a retail Maxtor, there should be a utility for it included on disk, if not, check the maxtor site to see if they have a free download hard drive data transfer utility.

I have Norton Ghost as part of my Norton Pro disk and thats fairly easy to use, basically its a dos utility that copies block per block over to the other drive.

There are some other similar programs available and if you do a google search, you might find a free one to use.

Maxtor has a utilitry for that on it's site I think.

But Norton Ghost is my choice.

Go to the maxtor site and d/l their bootable diagnostic and utility programs- Maxblast+2 and Powermax. One of them has the capability of copying your entire drive onto a new drive.

I think it just transfers the settings and you need to computers to do that anyway

Yeah I tried it. The IBM drive has a few bad sectors, and that program will only work in Slow Mode because of these bad sectors. Slow mode + 33 gigs = 8 hours

any faster solutions?

Norton Ghost, that is what corporations use to install Windows over the entire network.

All you need is maxblast-

Download it to the desktop, insert formatted floppy, unzip to floppy, reboot to floppy, follow the directions. Free, and a piece of cake. I've never used it on a drive with bad sectors, though.

You could always format and partition the new drive, copy the keeper files over to the second partition, load the o/s on the first partition....

So I did that Cloner EXP in Slow Mode over night. It got to 18 gigs before my HD started doing the famous IBM click-click-click of death, and it didnt advance any further.

Like I said before, I can't find anything of any use on the Maxblast software and 'Powermax' doesnt work for some reason. It just returns me back to the Max Blast menu.
