Easiest way to pull homemade DVD content to AVI/MPG 1:1?

I have some home-made DVD movies of my brother's wedding, engagement, etc., that I want to edit. I want to rip the content back to my hard drive as close to 1:1 as possible. I know that there are a variety of compressors, encoders, extractors, etc. out there, but I just want a 1:1 AVI or MPEG for editing and burning again. It's not encrypted and there aren't any fancy menus or subtitles, it's just a straight-play movie. Is there a simple way to extract the audio/video from it, or am I better off just recording it using my video capture device with a DVD player?

since this is a home movie compression is not needed, when you rip it it will stay at the maximum quality. I would rip it to the HD using DVDdecrypter (if you can find it) or DVDShrink, since it is already on a 4.7 gb dvd it will not shrink it. to edit and author I would reccomend TMPGEnc DVDAuthor 1.6 (TDA 1.6).

Start TDA>
source setup
Add DVD Video
find the folder with your ripped dvd
in the pop up window select next
select ok
it will go through the vid looking for any chapter points
to edit select chapter cut/edit button in the top right
to edit use the set as start frame and the set as end frame
then use the cut button to delete all the frames in between you do not want.
then once you are done you can set chapter points on using the button on the right, add under the chapter list window
I prefer to use the automatically insert chapter points and use 3 minute intervals
then you can either use the menu templates they offer, none at all, or import one from photoshop or an image you have.

So basically, use DVD Decrypter to rip to files instead of an ISO/IFO, then open those files in TDA? TDA isn't too bad...under $50 online. I'll give it a shot, thanks!

Yup... sounds like the best way to do it. 🙂

Yeah, it cracks me up. I just got my wife an iMac Core Duo to do video editing on, and here I am using my PC to grab pre-recorded content from. Sheesh 😛

Rip the video in files mode

Yup, went with that. I'm actually giving Tsunami-MPEG Video Encoder XPress a try...same stuff as TDA but outputs to an MPEG file instead of back to a DVD. This way I can move the MPEG over to the Mac for editing. Encoding is taking forever tho...I might as well just use HandBrake for OS X instead lol.
