I'm planning on using this method to backup all of our blurays:
http://osxdaily.com/2010/03/25/rip-blu-rays-on-your-mac/

Which is the easiest way to play back these MKV files? I'll have gigabit ethernet set up from my file server to the HT.

I remember using my old roommate's PS3 to playback but no 5.1
Is there a $100 device that I can buy to solve this problem? I prefer not to set up a HTPC.

I have an xbox 360 if it's possible to do it with that.

Requirements:
720p and 5.1

Thanks!

An AppleTV with XBMC can easily do it. I believe it is possible to get a XBOX 360 to read MKVs while in media center, but I had no luck getting it to work.

That's also interesting software. I use DVDFab and Handbrake right now, but that doesn't even handle subtitles. :\

I'll have to check those out. Thanks!

You're talking about the AppleTV 2, right?

I really don't want to buy a AppleTV + XBMC then find out that it only does 2 channel audio.

I wonder what their return policy is... I might give it a go next week.

Thanks again!

Yes, it's an AppleTV 2. You hack it and install XBMC. It is also capable of bitstreaming the audio directly to your receiver as I have it regularly sending the Dolby Digital or DTS streams that are in the MKV to my receiver.

As for the XBOX, I believe if you can get WMP on the host PC to run MKVs, then the MCE in the 360 will work with them as well? I'm not 100% sure on that though.

Perfect thanks! I don't have windows on any of my computers and would like to to keep it that way ;)

I'll pick up a Apple Tv soon. Thanks!

I know I'm late to the party, but the PS3 supports both Dolby Digital (AC3) 5.1 and .aac 5.1. I know your Apple TV is on the way, but I thought I'd correct this in case in popped up in someone's Google search one day.

XBox 360 is suppoesed to do multi-channel .avi but I could never get any kind of good playback through it.

So I'm having trouble streaming stuff to XBMC on the aTv2

Any idea what your files look like?

thanks!

I would get a PS3 but the Apple Tv is $100 and it can do airplay

Look like? Do you mean how large they are and such? I usually rip my Blu-Rays in 1080p and set them to a specific size (between 9-12GB) depending on the length of the movie. I wouldn't try something closer to the BR's original size (30GB+) with the ATV2.

Hmm that's odd. My rips are 720p or 480p (Dvd right?) and neither will play. I think i'm going to run everything though handbreak once.

I'll have to give MakeMKV a try and see what happens when I try to play the resulting file on my ATV2's XBMC. As a note, I'm still on 4.2.1 (Listed as 4.1.1).

Thanks! I to am on 4.2.1 I downgraded somewhere during the jailbreak process. My boss wants me to try out iOS 5 beta so we can mess around with iPad mirroring via airplay. :\

I thought the apple tv kind of struggles with 1080p. It can do 720p no problem though.

I ran the video through handbreak and everything works perfectly. I don't even need to use XBMC

Yeh I was going to say that I handbreak my library to MKV and share it out through iTunes to my Apple TV and as well as to my iPad. No need to use XBMC.
