Easiest way to network 2 computers w/o a hub/switch?

just got a laptop and want a way to network/share files between the pc and laptop but dont have a hub/switch. is there any way to directly connect/network the two? possibly some USB device that connects to USB ports on both computers? or can I use network cat5 cable from one to the other?
