We have a patch on our property between the street (no curb) and the fence about 2 feet wide and 100ft long. It has a lot of rocks and other road debris in it (not trash) so it's always been fun mowing. Now this year I want to try and just keep it from growing anything. What is the best legal way to keep off all vegetation in that patch without affecting what's on the other side of the fence (bushes). Any suggestions from the lawn/yard pros here?

Roundup will kill what's growing there now, but it won't prevent weeds from growing back. You need a pre-emergent weed killer to keep the weeds from growing back. Atrazine or 24D would do the trick and last about 6 months. So mix either with some roundup and you should be good to go. Bear in mind that atrazine or 24D will not kill or prevent grass from growing so if you might need to spray roundup again at some point if any grass comes back.

I worked at couple of summer at an outdoor theater, and we used copious amounts of roundup on all of the trails to keep the weeds and grass from growing over them. Always seemed to do the trick for me. If you are really lazy or have a large area to cover, you can purchase a battery operated sprayer, and the roudup concentrate.

Did I mention that the theater was located in a state park, working under the don't ask, don't tell policy...

TEXAS!

I used roundup last year but I was out there every week spraying it and eventually gave up and started mowing it.

Cover it with a plastic bag or tarp.

Roundup kills amphibians and reptiles, and most likely everything else that lives, too.

Buy a goat, and a leash.

Tie it to the fence so it can walk up and down the strip eating the grass.

Dig up about 3 inches of dirt and put down weed preventing vinyl. Cover with dirt and then cover dirt with bark.

Poor idea, he will end up pulling weeds or mowing the weeds anyhow.

Thats how we killed off the grass in our yard when we wanted to build a pond. Got some plastic lining, covered the area, and waited a few months.

I've used those foilage killer chemicals that hook up to a garden hose. They work really well and last for a few months. You can pick them up at Home Depot or Lowes.

Diesel fuel apparently works really really well. I wouldn't recommend it though.

You could just try to change the pH drastically by dumping a ton of lime on it.
