Hey everyone, quick question... I just got my comcast line hooked up at 8mbps and I'm lovin it! I'm looking to hook just (1) other computer up to the internet, but I don't want to spend $50 on a seperate router. One of my friends said that if I have an extra LAN card, I could just hook my main PC to the modem via ethernet into my onboard LAN on my main PC, then have a CAT5 running from a PCI LAN card from my main PC to my 2nd PC's onboard LAN and have it connected that way. Does this make any sense? Would it work? I'm not sure I said that right, cuz it didn't make alot of sense when he told me, but is there a way to get my second PC connected to the comcast line w/ out purchasing a seperate router?

it's possible but the best advice is just to get a router. a chain like that requires:
-2nd LAN card in main PC
-crossover ethernet cable
-extra configuration in windows

in addition, the downside of that setup is that the second computer will be unable to connect if the first one shuts down.

a router will provide security and stability for the network and you can just use a regular patch cable for the second computer rather than trying to find a crossover.

Some friendly advice, the $50 for a new router is worth the headaches and troubleshooting I'll guarantee you'll have if you try using your 1 computer to share out the internet. I'd suggest simply buying a router. $50 is well worth it, not just for the added security.

I'll also toss my vote in for going with a router. Get a new or used linksys or netgear for $30-$40 and it will be much better than a $10-$20 extra NIC.
