What's the easiest way to change a motherboard and get Windows back up and running like I used to? I got windows on a partition by itself but I don't want to lose my file associations and shortcuts and what not. Could I just reinstall windows without formatting my c: drive? Would Windows set itself up for the new motherboard automatically (in terms of the devices on the board, not sound cards etc...)? Thanks.

Are we talking replacing a broken motherboard with the same type or upgrading the system? Depending on how much different the existing motherboard to the new one, your system may simply identify the new resources & you'll be ok. However, if you're talking upgrading a pentium 120 system to a new Athlon type motherboard, you might have some weird conflict.

You'll probably get a better response if you post your question to the motherboard forum.

Start/RUN/regedit/O.K.
Go to HKEY local machine, "enum" in registry and delete it. This forces a complete redo of all your drivers etc, and is the best way to start clean without all the old stuff lingering.(But export current registry to floppy, just in case)
You lose nothing on HDD.

Well, I currently have an AOpen AX6BC, a BX motherobard. I'm planning on getting either the MSI BXMaster or the ABIT BE6-II, both are BX motherboards.

Bozo, thanks for the tip. Will that work even if I upgrade to Windows98 SE? I currently use Windows 98.

if you are staying with the same brand of chipset, intel or via I dont think u will have any problems, I never had problems going from different intel chipsets.
