Easiest app to split MP3?

Which do you think is the easiest to split MP3s? I can't figure out MP3DirectCut. I've been using "MP3 Splitter and Joiner", which works but I figure could be a bit better.

Does Audacity split without having to re-encode? The website doesn't say, that I can find. Total Recorder's site says it does. Anyone used it? It also seems like a very good audio recorder (which I could also use), with more features than Audacity.

How about mpTrim mpTrim or "Cool MP3 Splitter & Joiner"?

I too would like to know if Audacity can split/cut/delete without converting to .wav and re-encoding.

As for MP3DirectCut...

I am using MP3DirectCut but it is very rudimentary and not precise enough. I have been able to figure it out but am hard-pressed to explain it. You just fiddle and fight with it until you more-or-less understand were to put the cut start point and then you drag the mouse to select the rest of the track you want to delete.

It is only good enough to delete unwanted portions at the beginning/end of Streamripper-recorded tracks.

Since you're recommending Audacity, can you not answer my question about it?

Audacity converts audio to its own format for editing (aup) when you open the file, so once you have made the changes you choose File>Export as ......(whatever, wav, mp3, ogg)

Is that what you wanted to know?

Well, I wanted to know if it had to decode, edit, then re-encode the MP3. From what you say, it sounds like it has to then. A few apps, like I think all the others I mentioned, edit the MP3 directly without having to do that (losing quality).

What's your problem with mp3directcut? That is by far the simplest way to split an mp3. You just select the part of the song you want and hit save. If you want to fade in or out, you can do that too. You can zoom in real close on the audio waveform to get the exact time you want also.
