I've been burned once in helping someone out.
now I say no to everyone asking for charity.

I also hear horror stories about donating to a legit charity and they sell your name.
then every charity out of the woodwork keeps calling you for $.

but I keep reading donating $ is good for the soul.

What say you wise(?) people of ATOT?

edit:
read this about giving away 10% of your income:

Giving is important because it puts your priorities in focus.
When you share your income, you appreciate it more.
Plus, it just makes you feel good!
Academic studies show that people who give to others are happier and less stressed.
They even live longer!

Be selective. I've donated to charities in the past and they just send tons of crap, including change in envelopes saying that if you don't send money you hate the charity, etc. My identity was stolen a few months after all of that, so I don't know if there's a link. I'm more of a fan of cash donations, but that can make it hard to donate to specific groups.

I generally don't even acknowledge the request. I sought out the charities I give to.

If a charity contacts me, they generally get a big fat NO.

When I donate, I choose carefully...charities that serve a group that I care to help.

I dont pay solicitors, that only encourages soliciting.
I have a couple charities I like. I pay thru the web, anonymously.
I dont get harassed. Life is good.

I've donated to a few political campaigns, to NPR every year, and a few animal charities. So not a lot, but I've never been bombarded by communication from any of them.
