EA's Spore expansion blitz

EA has no intention of letting the Spore franchise wilt on the vine, and so they have announced four new titles to continue it on a variety of platforms. For the PC, Spore: Galactic Adventures is an expansion set for the final (and largest) phase of the main game set to release in spring. The press release teases the ability to visit planets for missions, and even create customized missions for others to follow. Of course, as an expansion it will also contain the requisite new accessories and items. The PC will also get Spore Creature Keeper, which resembles more of a virtual pet game and is targeted towards kids. Players will use toys and gadgets to nurture their pet monstrosity.
Nintendo's platforms are also getting love from the franchise. Spore Hero is an adventure game made with Wii controls in mind. Spore Hero Arena is the spiritual successor to Spore Creatures, and lets players do battle with their creations. Both games are due in the fall.

Though Spore faced some criticism from reviewers and opposition to its DRM, it seems like fertile ground for EA to mine for new games. As long as they don't expand to Spore H&M Fashions, delivering more content and an expanded world can't hurt.

I'm all for releasing additional, quality content for games, but I think the Spore franchise has been irreparably damaged by the DRM scandal.

Yyyyyyyyep. I didn't buy the game (and I'm glad I didn't since it's garbage anyway) but I was initially excited for it. Too bad EA will never learn from their mistakes. Though I do think I read something about them being a little more lax on the DRM, though it will still exist.

I think they're going to be surprised at how little the PC expansion is going to sell (due to Spore sucking), and then blame it on piracy.

I think this is more to the point. I was enjoying it for the first while, but it definitely got boring later on and is not something I can see myself replaying. Great concept, but a very flawed execution in many ways.

Yeah it was total balls, the sims 2 is probably a more complex game than spore is.

this. I enjoyed all the Simcity games, and both Sims games as well, but Spore was just... missing something.

not really surprised by this. Remember the big EA restructer where they formed a coupel core divisions, and one was like just for Sims crap. they'll milk every penny they can out of minimal product for maximum games as long as teh sheepple are willign to keep paying for it.

This. I still haven't played much more than 15 minutes into the Space phase because I was incredibly bored by the time I got to it. It's one of those things I plan on going back and toying with when I get finished with some other games.

I thought they did this with the battlefield series too, where you had to buy extra weapons and shit for a few bucks after you already paid $50 for the game.

I don't really feel sorry for anyone though. If you don't have the sense to close your mouth while EA is trying to crap into it there's no helping you!

right, the difference is night and day. with sims 2, the depth and the randomness where every game is different. anytime i reinstall sims 2 for the expansion, i find myself playing it for hours.

with spore, the randomness is just superficial or non existent, for example, in the cell stage all you need to do is max out all your ability bubble and that's it. then in the more advance stage when you can build cities... i just quit... realizing hey, i could play civilization 1 right now and have more fun.

It's been awhile since I read the story, but I believe they reformed into a battlefield, a sims, a madden, and a spore division.

Which means anything not directly related to those 4 areas should be viewed even more skeptical than normal ea fare. And those that are from those areas can be expected to be released as a partial game with plans for expansionitis.
