EA's new anti-consumer tactic? C&C4 to always require active internet connection.

The new DRM is here to stay. Forget about playing offline... at all... ever.

EA's justification is that they track player progression, however this is not an MMO, nor is it a persistent world. So how does single player fit into this scheme?

Great idea! it's not like the pirates can hack the game to run in offline mode like they do with no-cd cracks.

Not surprised given what was mentioned in the questioner they sent me about the game.

Because internet connections never go down, and you'll never want to play somewhere that you're not connected to the internet. Screw you, jerkholes.

Another reason to make me feel I did the right thing in boycotting anything EA months ago.

It is a persistant world. You create a profile that is used in both single and multiplayer. When you complete objectives and kill enemy units you gain XP which is used in multiplayer and skirmish to unlock units for the three different offensive/defensive/support roles It's a RTS with RPG elements from what it seems like.

Still it's stupid and it's obvious they took a page right out of steam's book.

You don't need to be online all the time to play games using Steam.

Steam has an offline mode...

Yeah, EA can shove it on this one.

A perfect excuse for EA to cancel yet another PC franchise.

Command and Conquer 3 was a actually a great game. You all need to stop bashing it. RA3 was horrible off course.

The internet authentication move by EA sucks, but PC gaming doesn't. The logic here is flawed. You cannot make the game REQUIRE an internet connection it's just not wise. What about all those people that don't have internet? What about all those times when the internet goes down? What about gaming on the go on the laptop? Should all those people just curl up and die? This doesn't make any sense! No seriously fuck those bastards. I will look for a crack for this damn game when it comes out so I can play offline. I'm sure the crackers will come up with something. There were plenty of games and apps in the past that required an internet connection and all of them were cracked just fine - this will be too.

The best part was that you could play CNC3 fine online with a crack.

This is to me the best way of doing it--CoH does the same thing. And in terms of money loss, most people have an internet connection--look at WoW's success.

As long as people keep buying their products they will continue to pull this crap. Complaining on forums will do nothing. Hit them where it counts, stop buying anything EA.

Legitimate customers will be inconvenienced if their internet breaks.

Pirates will just patch the game to send this traffic to lo and run some kind of daemon. This should be easy to accomplish with minimal packet sniffing.

Steam used to require you to enter offline mode while your connection is active, didn't really work when some drunk dude crashes his truck into a utility pole. Is this still true?

I'd say my internet connection has an uptime of about 99% of the year - /shrug

"You won't need a broadband connection, in fact you'll be able to use a dial-up connection to get the game to play"

Quite honestly - in this day and age - you'd pretty much have to be living under a rock, cave, or just plain refuse to pay to access the internet [56k modem, dsl, cable, satellite, wireless].

This is the wave of the future as I predicted a long time ago - PC games are going to start "including / requiring" an online component in order to play the game.

Until we know more, this doesn't really scream Steam style anything per-se.
If you can resell it and just then have to give the other person your account, then it's not really a big deal in terms of stopping sales. Sure it's a pain that you require an internet connection even for single player, and it's probably the first game to require one all the time for SP, but there are many games overall which pretty much require an internet connection, so in that sense it's nothing new.

It sounds horrible in concept, but I will wait until the execution is clearer before passing a damning judgement on it.

You can boycott all the PC products you want, but EA will not give a damn. They make almost all of their revenue off their console titles like Madden and NCAA and the rest comes from Sims. I would say they get about 5% of their profits out of PC games besides Sims.

Anyway, DRM aside I hope this game is awesome. CNC3 was the best RTS I played in many years. Although RA3 sucked.
