Weird, eh?

When I first booted up the machine with no OS, it was whisper quiet. Ever since I put XP on this machine the PSU sounds like a vacuum.

Any thoughts?

PSU fans spin up when there's load. There's no load if there's no OS.

What's is this PSU powering?

Not much of anything, really:

e2180
320gb Seagate
2GB RAM
ASUS p5VBM
Integrated graphics
1x DVD Burner

...that's it. It belongs to my parents. It's a web surfer/word processor.

Hmm... shouldn't be getting that loud since you shouldn't be loading it up too much with that rig.

I'd suspect a problem with the fan speed controller on that particular unit, simply because they're generally pretty quiet. Contact your vendor or Antec to see what they'll do about it...

Are you sure it is the PSU making the noise? Make sure there is no disc in the optical drive, and perhaps run the system (temporarily) without the CPU fan plugged in to see if it makes a noise difference.

Or just stick a Q-Tip into the hub of the PSU fan to see if the noise stops.

Could be that the fan controller in the PSU is fubarred and isn't controlling the fan properly. If you're certain the fan is the source of your noise, RMA the PSU.

It's his thread, though... so it's cool. Guess the problem's still not resolved.

Right of course. I was just surprised it is not yet resolved.

Jshmuck2, did you RMA the PSU? Or what has happened with all this?

I've used a few earthwatts units in customer builds now and have had no issues with noise so something does seem amiss.
