After the earthquake yesterday my girlfriend is worried about having a survival kit.

So i wanted to buy:

2 cases of military issue MRE's (meals ready to eat)

5 gallon jug of purified water or a water filter (depending on what you guys think is best)

and some dog food.

My questions:

On ebay how can I tell which MRE's are the real military ones?

A big jug of water or should i get a water filter of some type?

Is there such a thing as emergency dog food? Something that will keep for years and won't attract insects and rodents into my garage?

Look for the ones that say you're not supposed to sell them. Those are the ones that are actually issued out to troops.

Really??? Expensive MRE's just to be cool?

Go to Costco or any market and buy earthquake kits and some canned food and throw in some bottled/packaged water and you're set. And yes there is dog food that won't attract insects, it's called CANNED DOG FOOD just like CANNED HUMAN FOOD.

This. It's like $40 for 12 MREs on Ebay. A can of Progresso soup comes out to like ~$1.20 at Costco.

So canned dog food must be your favorite snack huh? ;)

Just get a gun and take what supplies you need from other people.

Canned food instead of MREs.
More water (3+ gallons per person).
You need to have enough water for when drinking water stops because of a pipe break or is contaminated, and you can't rely on electricity or gas to boil it.
You can survive for over a week without food, and only a couple days without water. Get more water.

This...no need to get prepared yourself...just make sure your neighbors are...

Edit: Ok, sorry, have to remember to not post useless posts (like someone here).

Honestly, lots of water is needed. Bottled, no filters as main lines can break or become contaminated past the point of what a consumer filter can remove.

Any canned for is fine...MREs are awesome but way too overpriced and completely unhealthy unless you plan to run a couple miles after every meal.

Basically:

LOTS of water...bottled. At least a few gallons per person, maybe more as you have no idea how long itll take for normality to be restored.

Canned food...and some good ones too...vegetables, fruits...try to stay away from unhealthy crap like soups, canned tamales...

Dog food = canned dog food...also good for back up food as well...the canned food...not the dog...until you have too...

There are several brands of civilian MREs, some made by the same companies that make the military MREs, that are just as good. Perfectly legal too. I use the Ameriquel aPacks for backpacking. Menu Cs are the closest you'll get to actual military, and are correspondingly the most expensive.

P.S. Keep in mind aside from being illegal, the military MREs you find online might have sat in a tent in the desert for months before making it to ebay. Probably still good to eat, but why not go for the fresh stuff?

You should also look into purchasing a hand-crank radio/flashlight, a pocket-knife (if you don't already own one), and a few good flashlights with extra batteries.
