8-15-2007 7.9 Rocks Peru

Straight down on this side.

It wasn't a 7.0 but certainly bigger than the usual shakes in the region.

There has been a lot of movement on the other side, this side is due.

8-9-2007 Small earthquake hits Los Angeles area

A small earthquake hit the northern Los Angeles area just before 1 a.m. (4 a.m. EDT) on Thursday, waking residents across a broad swathe of the area, but there were no immediate reports of significant damage.

The 4.5 preliminary magnitude quake was centered 4.1 miles north-northwest of the suburb of Chatsworth, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was extremely shallow, at only 3 miles deep.

Residents reported a strong jolt, followed by a lot of shaking. Some said pictures fell off walls, water sloshed around in toilets, and television sets wobbled on cabinets. A police spokesman said the quake triggered hundreds of alarms.

It was followed by two aftershocks, both with a preliminary 1.6 magnitude.

Chatsworth is just six miles west of Northridge, the epicenter of the magnitude 6.7 quake that killed 57 people and injured more than 9,000 in 1994.

Scientist's and Politicians have been mum about it but the sensors have been going nuts last few months.

Consistent 5's off the coast of Oregon, 4.0 SW of Salt Lake today.

A series of 1.5's along the New Madrid up and down the Mississsipi.

A ring of a lot of small shaking all around California.

8-6-2007 4.0 earthquake shakes central Utah

The 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck at 2:48 a.m., 14 miles southeast of Mount Pleasant, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenter was in the Huntington Canyon area, about 100 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.

=================================================

All suggesting there will be a very large slip of the plates along or near the big San Andreas very soon.

Edit

8-6-2007 HUNTINGTON, Utah - Six miners were trapped by a cave-in Monday at a coal mine five miles from the epicenter of a minor earthquake, authorities said

The Genwal mine reported a "cave-in" at 3:50 a.m., an hour after the magnitude 4.0 earthquake, the Emery County sheriff's office said. "Rescue workers are on scene trying to locate six miners that are unaccounted for," the sheriff's office.

There has been no contact with them, said Dirk Fillpot, a spokesman at the Mine Safety and Health Administration in Washington.

The miners were believed to be 1,500 feet below the surface, about four miles from the mine entrance, Fillpot said.

Update 2: Cave In was the Earthquake, nevermind. Looking at all the activity in Utah lately it has to have been an Earthquake that caused the cave in.

Because not only is Dave McOwened a finance expert (because he knows that stock shorting = company is going out of biz), weather analyst (because he can tag F5 tornados through radar, and estimate their damage $$$ factor which determines Fscale), business analyst (because he knows what companies are bad), structural/Civil engineer (He knows how bridges fail), top-notch network dude (maybe true), but he's also the worlds preeminent geologist (because he can call earthquakes)!

A true master at all tasks, especially fearmongering.

Wow, I didn't know you had a degree in seismology too! Their data, your conclusion. Maybe, just maybe all the scientists with degrees in seismology are being quiet about it because they're reaching a different conclusion?

Volcano: lots of little earthquakes indicate things are moving around, i.e. magma moving toward surface

Earthquake zone: lots of little earthquakes *relieve* the strain, not increase the strain.

Especially with statements like this "- 1906 type Temblor about to strike" for which he provides absolutely no factual basis. Just Chicken Little "Oh No! The sky is falling!" drivel.

Psst...don't tell him that. Facts, figures, and truth do not fit well with his ideology.

I still can't believe he said in P&N that any company which has been shorted on the stock market will become bankrupt and go out of business.

Considering *every* company on the stock market is shorted at one point or another, that's as moronic of a statement as anybody could ever make about the stock market.

I suppose, in Dave's timeframe, that in 10bn years, after the sun explodes, he will say "I was right, that shorting caused the sun to explode and all of the companies to die!!!!"

Hey Dave, why stop there? Bust out your Jump-to-Conclusions(TM) mat and tell us that an earthquake caused the bridge collapse in Minneapolis, but now FEMA scientists and politicians are trying to cover it up like they did Katrina!

KATRINA WAS NOT A CAT 3!!!

We're talking about geological events here, so 'very soon' could mean decades or centuries.

Anyways, lets entertain Dave's idea that the government and scientists COULD predict an earthquake (which they can't... China supposedly did one time, and one time only) on such a massive scale... what would they do? Would they call for a mass evacuation? And if they did, and nothing happened for weeks or months, then what (i'd bet there'll be a lot of pissed off people)? So i think they would keep it quiet, and move FEMA and other resources into place incognito.

Don't forget that the earthquake is paying us to keep his actions quiet. Fricking thing has the ear of every politician since it donated tons of money to their campaigns.

That dirty flucker.

And that is why the New Madrid fault is shaking. It's God trying to hit Oklahoma.

Well, since this only affects the leftist West Coast, then yes, it is obviously a right wing Bush political ploy. He'll declare a state of emergency and get Congress to retain him in office past the end of his term, due to extreme circumstances. Then Cheney will reveal himself as the anti-christ, pulling off his pants during a press conference showing the world his cloven hooves and spiked tail. Good thing I got my ammo on order.

And this compares to seismic data preceeding earlier high magnitude quakes how?

As I understood it, lots of little slips put off the occurance of the inevitable larger slips.

not commenting on anything dave posted, but I know I have heard a couple of times that the New Madrid is due for one in the next decade or so.

Just looked at wiki -

"The probability of magnitude 6.0 or greater in the near future is considered significant; a 90% chance of such an earthquake by 2040 has been given. In the June 23, 2005, issue of the journal "Nature", the odds of another 8.0 event within 50 years were estimated to be between 7 and 10 percent.[2] Because of the unconsolidated sediments which are a major part of the underlying geology of the Mississippi embayment, as well as the river sediments along the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys to the north and east (note the red fingers extending up these valleys in the image above), large quakes have the potential for more widespread damage than major quakes on the west coast.

He must be working with the gas companies. Gas is getting less expensive, so something has to be done to drive it up.

As a geologist, I'm not sure whether to laugh or sigh.

How would minor quakes at various places that ARE NOT the San Andreas Fault Zone (New Madrid, Utah [Basin and Range], and Oregon) allow you to predict a major earthquake on the San Andreas?

Well, I guess he simply implying that the plates are starting to be active/move.
OP was also suggesting that the same happened before the last major EQ.
That's physics, the science of guessing the future based on what happened before.
