I have heard in other places as well.

My wife is up near Mt. Fuji and almost everyday 5-6 earthquakes are felt.

End of world 6 days or coincidence? :)

It's like saying earthquake activity is up near Cali. There's always going to be quakes.

The really large quake will have moved the continent enough to create "hot" spots, which then move to relieve pressure.

Hence more quakes.

yeah like 5-6 a day?

So what if they're of that magnitude? The entire region is called the Ring of Fire and has a history of earthquakes. Do you think that nature ever behaves according to our wishes? This reminds me of something the comedian George Carlin had once said. It's something about people living near volcanoes and then wondering when they have lava in their livingroom.

I was going to make some smart-assed comment about how "when she said the bed was shaking, she didn't mean there were earthquakes," and I was going to post the data for all the recent earthquakes for the lulz.

But, holy shit, you're not kidding.
Big quakes - at least 9 in the past 7 days; plus many more that could easily be felt. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_big.php

I'm slightly geographically challenged when it comes to areas of Japan. But, I'm going to guess she's somewhat near the "East coast of Honshu"

Don't forget it will have nothing to do with the other side of the plate rocking and rolling soon too. Nothing at all.

I predict there will be at least one earthquake near Japan in the next day or two. You heard it here first.

I predict that the Sun will rise tomorrow. See, I can do it too!

It's all this global warming doing it. That BP oil spill didn't help much either.

Where? Haven't see the sun in a week here and it's fucking cold.
Get out of your mom's basement.

No, but seriously. You can't see the sun, therefore it hasn't risen? If you think this is the case, then you have more serious problems than a few earthquakes in a country on the other side of the planet.

Ummm...I am just reporting it dude...not all up in arms that "how dare seismic activity occur near a volcano!"

To those above...this is HIGHLY unusual activity for Japan. The people there are discussing it, but it's not making news outside Japan surprisingly.

I'd think with all this doomsday talk the media would be all over it.

Just to put it in some perspective, sure, California and Alaska are part of the Ring of Fire too. Earthquakes in Cali: 1.1, 1.2, 1.2, 1.3,1.1,1.4,1.1,1.2,...
Earthquakes in Japan 5.1, 5.2, 6.2, 5.1, etc. Don't forget, that means they're roughly 10,000 to 100,000 more energetic. And, they're popping up left and right. I'd love to see a discussion on this from the scientific community.

Nearly 18% of all of the 5.0 or greater earthquakes (nearly 60 of them) in the past week have been in the same general area by Japan.
