I made the mistake of recommending Earthlink to a friend. He just called saying he had a problem, and couln't get hold of anybody. So I took the mumbers 1-800-890-5128 (tech support) and 1-800-890-6356 (customer service) and called. I got the following:

Tech sup - "...........your call will be answered in 18 minutes"
Cust serv - ".............your call will be answered in 60!!!minutes.

welcome to the world of mindspring

Ya Earthlink should be ashamed of themselves, there customer service hold times are horrible. I mean I called them up cause of a billing error and the hold time was 1 hour and ten minutes, luckily I have a speaker phone. Forget about email help.
I never had them but wasn't AOL like that some years back and caught alot of flack from people and gave them a worst reputation then what they had already? I'd like to say what goes around comes around but I think they just get new customers and never really get affected.

They have sucked for a looooong time. I had to misfortune of using Earthlink for awhile by no fault of my own. I started a long time ago on a small ISP called "The Grid". Well "The Grid" was bought by a larger ISP called OneMain, then a little while later, OneMain was bought by, you guessed it, Earthlink. Luckily the DSL fairy came calling and I'm now on Pacbell DSL, but my parents are still on Earthlink and they are a pain the butt. Last night my dad tried for about two hours to get online, nothing. Its like that all the time too.

*sigh*

I remember when Mindspring was a local startup and you could call and speak to one of the 15 employees personally within 1 minute...

I had earthlink for 2 years before I got my DSL 4 months ago. I really liked them a lot. Never had problems with getting a hold of tech support either. hmmm...... me thinks I dropped them at the right time.

Yea, The Grid was pretty good, too bad they couldn't resist the devastating tempest that is Earthlink. Earthlink must own like 20 ISP's now.

21 jumper - did you get a earthlink.net or mindspring.net user account. I told my friend i saw on the internet that getting mindspring was much worse, but when he signed up the operator wouldn't let him go earthlink. Does anyone have any insight on this aspect of the situation?

Well I really can't complain about there down time,I have DSL from them and it's very fast and its up 98% of the time. But I will say I was mislead when I signed up. They told me it was 39.95 for the life of my contract and then raised it to 49.95 after 6 months. So I called and bitched and they said it was a 6 month contract and I told them the salesmen specifically said it was a set price of 39.95 for good and yadda yadda yadda. Anywho, they basically said take it or leave then I mentioned BBB and Attourney General and they credited my account 50 bucks though I told him that still didn't satisfy me and they said thats all they can do. Basically all DSL is 49.95 now and I don't know if switching to another DSL isp is worth the hassle. I just don't like being mislead. Looks like I'm not the only one who had issues with them... I'm switching from Earthlink DSL to Sprint ION in Sept. Earthlink is ok if you never, ever need to talk to someone. The days of the small, local isp are about gone.

I have Earthlink or should I say Mindspring DSL and it rocks. I have been up for 4 months no outages. There tech support is 24/7 so I just call at 1 or 2 in the AM and there ususally isnt a wait.

trmiv, you're lucky you haven't had problems with PacBell--I heard they suck when you have a problem.

There's a local ISP that I've used named "Provide.net" They only charge around $15 for unlimited usage and it's the best service and speeds I've ever seen. It's around the Ann Arbor area in Michigan, if you're looking for a good ISP.
