Earthlink Highspeed Online

Hi,

My sister has Eartlink Highspeed Online. Well the problem is that she has a Mac and both a PC. Only one computer is turned on at a time. She only has internet on the PC and has trouble getting internet to the Mac.

I see that there is an ethernet plug to both the Mac and the PC. So I guess both computers have onboard ethernet. However, the PC, which has internet, does not use the ethernet port. She has the cable from the wall, plugged into an external modem, which is plugged into the PC by a USB. The modem also has an ethernet port that is not used as well as a power cable which is used to turn it on.

So far I have only tried plugging in the modem itself to the Mac by USB, which did not work (I'm guessing it needs a driver that I could not find), and I tried plugging the modem to the Mac with an ethernet cable, which also did not work. I tried plugging in the PC with ethernet cable which did not work either.

Any ideas?

Also, would I be wrong to assume that the modem is also an external ethernet adapter?

probably because the Mac isn't getting DHCP. Make sure DHCP is turned on the modem Mac.

You MUST powercycle a cable modem (not sure about DSL) between devices. If at all possible, change from USB to ethernet. Getting a cheap router (10-50) would be a good solution, as then both could be on, and you don't have to do the cable swapping game.
