I am a newbie in wireless network. I have the Time Warner cable comes with the Earthlink broadband.

Yesterday I hooked up my Netgear MR314 wireless router and configured according to the manual.

I did not install the Earthlink Total access 2003 software, because when I plugged the cable directly from

cable modem to the computer, I could browse the Internet. But when with the router, only one computer

could access the Internet, my laptop with wireless pc card and Ethernet card could not access the Internet.

BTW, the netgear manual said the IP address of the computers should be between 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.32,

my laptop obtain the IP address automatically, but not this range.

I am using Windows 2000 professional for both machines.

Any suggestions? Thank you very much.

Let's see if I have this straight--2 comps, one is a laptop with a wireless card, the other...a tower with a cable to the router? Question for you..is the router set to act as a DHCP server or not? If it isn't, then you have to manually assign IP's for your comps. If it is, then do a release and renew from the command prompt to be assigned an IP from your router. You say your laptop did obtain an IP, what was it?

Thanks RustyNale. The router acted as a DHCP server. I used ipconfig.exe to find that the laptop 's IP address was 24. 1xx.xx.xxx,

could not remember clearly. I manually set its IP to 196.168.0.3 or something in the range, but the problem existed.

Do you have your wireless card ( in the laptop) set to the same channel as the router?

If you use a cable to connect to your router, does it give you an IP and access to the internet?

Your problem has nothing to do with Earthlink or your Router!!!

It seems that your Laptop Wireless Card is not configured correctly.

Read the manual, and do the initial configuration while the Laptop is next to the Router.

Thank you, RustyNale and JackMDS.

Yes, I set the same channel and ESSID for wireless pc card and the router.

The problem is, when I plugged the network cable to the 10M/100M NIC in the laptop, I still could not access the Internet.

I will look at that link and go home tonight, hopefully solve this problem.

In that case, I'd uninstall all the protocols and reinstall them.

RustyNale, the problem is that if I configured router to " Snoof this PCs MAC address- 192.168.0.2" in " WAN MAC address" setting,

neither one of the two computers could access the Internet. I had to choose the factory default setting which might be the problem.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the protocols, nothing happened so far.

Question for you: with cable, I've found that there aren't any configurations to do to the router, default settings should work just fine, have you tried setting the router back to factory defaults and not changing anything, then attempting to access the internet?

Try this too: from a command prompt on your laptop, type: ping 127.0.0.1
You should get 4 replies back with 0 loss. This is a loop back ip to test your nic. If you don't get 4 successful pings, then there's a problem with your nic or protocols.

Another thing you could try is to go into your router and tell it NOT to be a dhcp server.(write down the dns numbers that your status screen should have, first) Then assign IP's and subnet masks and dns numbers in each of your comps. 192.168.0.2 with 255.255.255.0 as your subnet mask, the 2nd comp would be 192.168.0.3 with same subnet mask. You'll also need to put in the IP address of your router as the gateway which should be 192.168.0.1 for that router.

RustyNale, thank you so much.

I tried to ping 192.168.0.1, 128.143.2.7 and www.yahoo.com, only got "unknown host name" from Yahoo.

The DNS must be screwed up. Since I formated and installed Win2000 two days ago, I thought it's not

the system's error. But I decied to give another try. I reinstalled Win2000 on the laptop, guess what,

no DNS error any more. So the problem is not of the router or cable, just of the damn operating system.

Now I am happily using the laptop with wireless network at home. :) Thanks again.
