I don't really think it does much, but it's a neat concept to raise some awareness about energy usage and climate change (not really relevant here given our power comes from dams) I guess. I did it last year, I just turned off the main breaker. I like to give my big UPS a test run once in a while and it's a crude way of forcing an equalize so it worked out.
I don't think it would be a good idea to be turning off the main 1,600 amp breaker here at work though.
