52 years ago today, the very first Earth Day was held. According to Wiki, "More than 20 million people poured out on the streets, and the first Earth Day remains the largest single day protest in human history. "
Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, was one of the key organizers. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work.
These words from Sen. Nelson inspire me to this day, so I put them in my sig:
“The ultimate test of man's conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard.”
It makes me weep to realize the mulitple lost opportunities we, as a nation and as world-wide community of nations, have squandered. To this date, we have materially failed to rise to the occassion of saving our planet from short-sighted greed and unbelievably entrenched anti-science IGNORNACE.
Instead, we got Ronald Reagan and then George Bush and finally, Donald Trump. The present Republican Party has a lot to be held account for.
It seems almost a sepia-toned memory of some distant past, but Senator Gaylord Nelson was a proud and unapologetic American Liberal . . . a believer in the power of our institutions, backed by an informed electorate, to work for the good of ALL.
I remain that man today. I am a proud American Liberal, as is our President, the thoroughly decent and caring Joseph Robinette Biden. He can only accomplish what, collectively, the Senate will allow him to do . . . what the do nothing, caring not Republican asswipes, still in thrall to that third rate carney barker Trump and his legion of ignorant, Fox News polluted morons will allow him to do.
WE MUST ALL KEEP OUR EYES ON THE 2022 Federal elections. That work must start now. Let's give Joe the majorities he needs to do the work we need, that the planet needs.
Please.
