Earplugs for sleeping?

The walls are semi-thin where i sleep, and i hear a lot of noise from other rooms, people talking and music going on and everything else. Makes it hard to get to sleep, i have enough trouble sleeping as it is. Is there some way to help block out sound when trying to sleep? Earplugs would probably feel annoying. Headphones would be too extreme :p - I'm not into any "sleep sounds" CDs.

Any ideas? Any products out there designed specifically for this purpose?

I recomend these.

They work really well at blocking out sounds (bass, cars, banging, etc) but you can still talk to the person next to you..

They take a couple of days to get used to but you can use them as long as they stay clean (meaning wash your hands before you put the plugs in). They also make a sleeper version that softer, but it lets in a little more noise.

Go to any sporting goods store & buy a bottle of high decibel reduction earplugs. Should be like $6-7 for 25 pairs of 30+ decibel reduction.

Use each pair for a few days/nights/whatever & a bottle should last you quite a while.

I thought it wasn't good to sleep with earplugs in. Increases risk of an ear infection.

..I have wide band white noise recorded on my MP3 player and just repeat it all night long. I use ear plugs to. So thru the earplugs the WB white noise sounds like the ocean..I usually sleep 7-8 hours and fall asleep while reading and listening to the ocean.

I sleep flat on my back so I just use over-the-ear hearing protectors when it gets noisy. I'm sure it would kill almost all noise if I used ear plugs in addition to the hearing protectors.

these are the best kinds and i wear them nightly.

i've tried the howard leight ones that are linked in a post above, but they are not as good. i've also gone through a bunch of other earplugs (foam, rubber, you name it), but this is the best you're going to get.

mack's soft foam earplugs (the beige ones linked on that product page; they are 32 NRR) are the most comfortable earplugs you'll encounter, and it also blocks out the noise the most (there are no 33 noise reduction rating earplugs on the market unless you use regular earplugs and a headphone type of gadget on top of that).

granted, no earplug is super comfortable. these take awhile to adjust to, and when you insert them, you'll recognize that your ear is very sensitive to it. don't push them in too much because you can infect your ears, and i promise you that is not comfortable at all.

also, don't use q-tips in your ears under any circumstances when trying to clean them, especially since you are pushing things in your ears now. i had a medical emergency awhile ago because of that ... i was partially deaf and in excruciating pain for a day. :(

search google for earwax cleaning drops.

or go to an ENT and have him suck out the yuckies out of your ear.

a few months ago, i tried to clean my ears with a q-tip and apparently pushed some earwax close to the eardrum which is incredibly painful. i couldn't see a doctor (it was the weekend) so i had to wait.

Sometimes I turn on a fan if there are outside noises keeping me awake. A big fan usually drowns out everything else.

I recently bought a box of 200 just for that reason. I'd try a bunch of different types before you settle one one since everyone has different ears. The Grainger.com catalog has a bunch of different types.

 Waves every night. With the earplugs, you are also going to start hearing your own pulse.
