6-year-old takes family car after missing bus
19 hours ago

WICOMICO CHURCH, Va. (AP) ? A 6-year-old Virginia boy who missed his bus tried to drive to school in his family's sedan ? and crashed. His parents were charged with child endangerment. State police said the boy suffered only minor injuries and authorities drove him to school after he was evaluated at a local hospital for a bump on his head. He arrived shortly after lunch, Sgt. Tom Cunningham said.

It happened around 7:40 a.m. Monday on Route 360, about 61 miles east of Richmond.

The boy, whose name wasn't released, missed the bus, took the keys to his family's 2005 Ford Taurus and drove nearly six miles toward school while his mother was asleep, police said.

He made at least two 90-degree turns, passed several cars and ran off the rural two-lane road several times before hitting an embankment and utility pole about a mile and a half from school.

The boy told police he learned to drive playing Grand Theft Auto and Monster Truck Jam video games.

"He was very intent on getting to school," said Northumberland County Sheriff Chuck Wilkins. "When he got out of the car, he started walking to school. He did not want to miss breakfast and PE."

His parents, Jacqulyn Deana Waltman, 26, and David Eugene Dodson, 40, are each charged with child endangerment, Wilkins said. Waltman is being held without bond. Dodson was released on a $5,000 bond.

It was not clear if they had attorneys.

The boy and his 4-year-old brother were placed in protective custody.

"This really is a story of miracles," Wilkins said. "The Lord was with him, along with everybody else on the highway."

he got 6 miles before crashing!!

Turns out it was 10 miles.

The real question is, what was his point multiplier before he crashed? I hate it when it resets ...

Oh, and in 6 fuckin miles, no one saw this 6 year old driving a fucking CAR and called the cops?

I dunno how much fault I would place on the parents. Everyone I know, including my parents when I was younger, is careless with keys. It just doesn't seem like something that's likely enough to worry about. Obviously it happens, but who could possibly predict it?

Awesome that the kid made it 6 miles. Seems like he must be pretty bright, actually.

If your kid is 6 years old you should be up when he wakes up and make sure he gets on the bus.

well not waking up to make sure your kid goes to school is one thing. it is another to blame them for the kid being a little douche

i really dont know how you can charge the parents with anything for this

yeah this

it's a parents duty to look after their children. the keys shouldn't have been accessible. the parents should have been awake. the 6 year old should have been supervised.

they aren't going to go to jail, probation likely, but this is criminal neglect and that no one died or seriously injured is pure luck.

If the kid ran someone over or died would you think charges would be appropriate then? Everyone just got lucky.

Wow so she was 20 and he was 34 when the kid was born.

edit: fuzzy math , thanks darkxshade 😛

Wait a second. I'm a parent and I've NEVER had a kid who got out of bed, got dressed etc and went to the bus BY HIMSELF. Who cares if he can drive - I wanna know what video game he plays that taught him to do THAT!

If you read the article, it mentions Grand Theft Auto.

What if the father got him up and such? He had to leave and told the boy to get on the bus... Easy task. The mother could have been asleep because she expected him to get on the bus.

That or video games taught him how to drive.

I think he was referring to the miracle that no one got seriously hurt.

😛 He'll be the next F1 driver. 😉

So both parents were sleeping while the kid got ready and left to catch the bus? 😕 Are they unemployed? My parents were always up at like 5 am when I was a kid.

Also, why didn't the kid just wake his mom up so she could drive him to school?

So was I.

So you're saying the game taught the boy how to crash safely?
