Ear candles

I know people who swear by them and then there are those who think it's just a gimmick.

Curious if anyone here has had any experience using these and what the results were. Also, if you have, can you recommend any "good" candles that are available online (links to where to purchase are appreciated). I figured I may try it just for the hell of it to see what happens. They seem to be pretty cheap so if it doesn't work, then no biggie.

I've never had it done, but I have a female friend who swears by it. I think she's had it done 3 times now. She keeps trying to get me to go. I'm all for trying it, but seems silly to pay money for it.

They work, if you use them correctly.

My wife and I have been able to pull out a lot of disgusting wax from our ears, which can be a huge relief when you have sinus congestion.

I get a problem with my right ear (only my right ear) where for whatever reason wax builds up and never drains until eventually my ear clogs and I lose hearing in that ear. It's very annoying and sometimes painful.

To remedy this problem I used to go to the doctor where they take a giant syringe and force a jet of water into my ear- ear irrigation they call it. It wasn't too bad and it at least gets the job the done.

Then one year my Aunt was telling me about candling which she performs and I never heard anythign about it before so had any pre-conceived biases, so I tried it. It worked. For the rest of that year my ear was clear (and usually it's an annual thing that I have to get something done). So from then on I did that instead (It was free, didn't have to wait on line and it was more comfortable).

Then I started doing some research on it online and was really surprised to find so many bad comments about it. Doctors swearing it doesn't work, people complaining it hurts. I guess it's a combination of doctors wanting to keep their patients comign to them and people who don't really know how to perform the candling and are not able to solve people's problems or even hurting them.

I also find it funny to see all these sites talking about how candling has all these spiritual, mystical benefits. Needless to say that's total BS.

So in conclusion, I vouch for the ability of candling to clear the ear and am living proof of it for the past several years now. But don't try to do it yourself, ask around to find someone who knows what to do.

But if you're looking to it to cleanse your soul or anything like that, then can't help you there!

Ear candling has been shown to be ineffective at creating a vacuum and removing impurities from the ear, and has resulted in numerous injuries

/thread 😉

That isn't how an ear candle works.

The heat causes the wax in your ear to get softer, and the wax in the candle acts as an emulsifier. As the flame burns off the wax at the end of the candle, it draws wax along the cloth. This in turn draws the wax out of your ear.

Debrox or similar products are far more effective and do not require you to have open flames near your hair and ears...

There is no possible way it can work. The wax on the end of the candle is not from your ear, but from the candle.

One of many debunkings of this silliness:

Why people believe this will draw any wax out of your ear is beyond me.

YES it works! Start with 1 candle. Not from your ear? Okay try a 2nd candle. Then a 3rd. By the 10th candle, does anything show up? NO.

(FYI, 1 candle is enough for most most people, don't do more than 2 at a time).

they are total utter BS

don't do it, you'll start your hair on fire

one of the silliest myths around

Ear candling is a solution in search of a problem.

And the solution doesn't even work. As one researcher wrote in the title of a paper, ear candling constitutes "a triumph of ignorance over science."

snake oil is a better deal because it at least contains alcohol and gets you drunk

There is absolutely no possible way they can work, the idea is completely ridiculous.

You are free to waste your own money on whatever you want, though.
