I installed eac and it seems to work fine but I can't get lame to work. I have eac pointed to the lame exe file, but when eac attempts to use lame I get a quick dos window, but its to fast for me to read. Eac leaves the files in wav format. I have tried to look on the web for installation instructions but I can't find any. I did read on one of the files to right click and choose install. I tried that but now I can't erase that folder. Now I have a lame folder that just won't go away. help please!

Lame is pretty hard to use as it runs from the command line and you supply the necessary switches to encode your mp3's the way you want.

Try the lame frontend Razorlame ... it's much easier to use.

Make sure you have the latest versions of EAC (0.9 beta 4) and LAME (3.92). Install EAC but don't configure it (well, you can but you'll just have to do it over). Then install LAME (all you have to do to install LAME is unzip the lame.exe file into a folder on your hard disk, I just put it in EAC's folder). Then run EAC's configuration wizard (EAC->Configuration Wizrd in the menus). It's really simple to follow along with the wizard.

RazorLAME is no easier to use, BTW.

thanks for the responses. I have done everything you said Workin' but I still end up with wave files. It seems to run fine. I ran lame.exe from a dos promt to see the message that blinks when I run eac.

------------------------------
C:\Program Files\lame>lame
LAME version 3.92 MMX
(http://www.mp3dev.org)
(Win32 binaries from: http://www.hot.ee/smpman/mp3)

usage: lame [options] <infile> [outfile]

<infile> and/or <outfile> can be "-", which means stdin/stdout.

Try:
"lame --help" for general usage information
or:
"lame --preset help" for information on suggested predefined settings
"lame --alt-preset help" for information on the seperate and very highly
tuned for quality predefined settings
or:
"lame --longhelp"
or "lame -?" for a complete options list
------------------------------------------------------

I have been messing with this for hours. Could it be that its not compatible with win xp. I just don't know what else to try. I even looked at some of the help in dos(no help). I do appretiate the effort. Thanks

I'm using EAC+LAME with WinXP right now. Works great!

The problem is you don't have it set up correctly. When you run the EAC configuration wizard, and get to the encoder configuration page, check the box that says "Install and configure the external LAME.EXE compressor" and click next. After it automatically finds the location of LAME.EXE, check the box that says "Use recommended settings (from r3mix forum)" and check the box that says "Let EAC create ID3 tags..." and click next. Click next on the freedb screen, and then choose "I am an expert, let me use the full potential of EAC" and click finish.

Then, from the EAC menu, choose compression options, and leave everything the way it is EXCEPT under the External Compression tab make sure "Delete WAV after compression" is checked.

That's all there is to it.

Thanks, actually I did get it to work but I don't know how. I followed your instructions(at least I believe so) and it still didn't work. Just on a wim, I tried converting from the wav files instead of directly from the cd. It worked! Then I tried directly from the cd. It still worked! I think maybe its becuase I closed and reopened the prog(maybe to save its settings). I don't know, but I apretiate all the help. Now I have to get on with my original purpose. I'm going to archive my entire cd collection. It may take a while but I get to use my comp as a juke box and when I can afford it, get a dvd burner and archive my collection. Again Thanks!
