EA titles that go "offline"

I have a question regarding games like EA sports titles that get "retired" after a year or two. I know that EA shuts down their servers for those games (ie Madden 10, etc) but are those only for things like matchmaking services or online tournaments? If I have the game and my friend has it, can I still play online against him or is the entire online experience turned off?

I don't play sports games and never realized this was the case but wow that sucks big time.

Talk about planned obsolescence.

It hasn't been just sports games, they have taken down the servers for Burnout 3: Takedown, The Simpsons, Def Jam, Lord of the Rings: Conquest, and a bunch of other games.

People laugh at PC gamers that constantly push for a dedicated server app and call them elitists, but planned obsolescence when it coming to online gaming in order to force people to buy newer games is pretty crappy IMO.
