When you buy a game, what do those 50 or in this case 30 dollars pay for? A lot of things, but you can bet that a crap load goes to the license a.k.a. cd-key. The ability to be able to play the game - that's what you pay for. And the cd-key grants you the ability.

So, what happened was that my girlfriend lost her copy of one of the sims2 expansions. I told her to call EA about it, and since she had the cd-key, they might ship her just the CD or CDs she's missing.

Nope. If you want the CD, you have to buy another license. Wow.

EA customer service sucks.

I don't typically like to defend EA, but it's not their responsibility to replace a CD that someone lost or broke. It's not a defective product and there's no warranty. It would be nice for both EA and it's customers, though, if they did it for a small fee. (similar to VALVe) If losing or damaging discs is a concern, backup or prepare to download. Neither is difficult and the latter is essentially honest despite the fact you probably would be distributing it to others who haven't purchased the game. You payed for the game.

But cheer up, there's plenty of other reasons to boycott EA. :)

Bingo, download the game on a torrent. You've already paid for it so it isn't piracy.

Not sure if that's really legitimate, but it's probably what I'd do. No sense just letting that cd-key you have going to waste. You'd probably need a no-cd crack to get it to work without a real CD, though.

I wonder what kind of response I would get if I went to the car dealership and told them I lost my car and ask them to give me a new one for free. I'll show them the title to the one I lost.

I assume you meant that as a reason she shouldn't get a new CD (who knows why you would be so vindictive) but it's actually an example of why she should. People treating digital property in the same way as physical property is the reason we have ridiculous things like the sony rootkit and 'trusted computing' etc.

/edit: in fact - get this
http://www.utorrent.com/
and this
http://ts.searching.com/torrent/229930/The_Sims_2_PC_Game
to retrieve the information you rightfully own.

Ban me, i don't care.

Well, if the car cost a penny to make and would work with your original car keys, then it would make sense.

Maybe, but they could provide, like some others do, another CD for a small shipping fee + materials. Face it anybody can get CDs, that's why we have CD-Keys, which stands for... you know what, I think it does more than anything. If it didn't stand for proof of purchase, than why would we need cd-keys to play online games.

Don't be stupid. Not is a license an experienc, not an actualy product, but the car dealership would give me another car, which is what I want another CD, tangible material.

If EA does it then they are opening a can of worms. You need to be considerate from their stand point as well.
your best bet is to d/l the torrent or d/l a no-cd hack.

Is there copy protection on the disc? If not, then you should have made backups. If there is, they should be willing to send out new ones.

After all, isn't it the license that's the important part, not the plastic?
