Electronic Arts, Spielberg in Game Sequel
Electronic Arts is teaming up with Steven Spielberg to develop original video games, the game-publishing giant plans to announce later Friday.

Spielberg will collaborate with EA on the development of three titles under the deal. Although EA will own the intellectual property underlying the games, Spielberg will have the exclusive right to develop movies or television shows based on the titles.

In a statement, Mr. Spielberg said, "Having watched the game industry grow from a niche into a major creative force in entertainment, I have a great deal of respect for EA's understanding of the interactive format."

Neil Young, vice president and head of EA's Los Angeles studio, said Mr. Spielberg will help the publisher take advantage of the capabilities of the new technologies. "What we're trying to do is answer the question our company was founded on, which is, 'Can a computer game make you cry?' " Mr. Young said. "One of the ways we're going to get there is by partnering with great storytellers like Steven."

Final fantasy brought me soooo close to tears, which is as close as i get w/ movies and such, so i'd say it could be done.

Two industry whores collide! Excellent!

Honestly, I am a fan of Spielberg films, by and large, aside from the fact that he can't make a movie without a "Hollywood ending" these days (see: War of the Worlds, Minority Report, AI...). But to team up with EA, yuck. EA is the slave trader of the game industry. Underpaid, overworked programmers making rushed licensed-based games based on hot properties.

EA will find some way to screw it up. Just like that fusion reactor the french are building. EA will find a way to screw that thing up to.

I doubt it'd end good, but hopefully it'll help bring immersion back into modern pc games, which has been lacking since HL1.

Doesn't do any good being cynical about it. It's not as if there were any warm fuzzy publisher for him to fall in with.

At least there's a chance of a broader base of creators being ushered into the process.
