EA Origin and Fresh Windows Install?

So my Vertex 2 SSD drive decided to crap itself for the second time in a row, so I wrote OCZ off and got myself a sexy new Samsung SSD. Nice fresh Install of Windows, and I had the foresight to keep my Steam and Origin folders on a second 1tb drive. Steam is easy enough to work with, attempt to relaunch the application and steam does all the heavy lifting for you, adding itself to the registry and restarting the steam client and all my games are just like I left them.

Origin... not so much. Does anyone know if there is a way to get origin up and running without having to reinstall the client and redownload all my damn games? Thanks.

I'm guessing the answer is "reinstall everything from scratch", then...

Had to do the same thing as you when I installed my SSD, Origin didn't bother picking up the games. Had to re-download and re-install every single one of them, BF3. lol.

Given what I've experienced with Origin personally, likely. You try installing the Origin client, logging in, and pointing it to the old install directories?

You still need to install origin again, but if you still have all the previous installs, you can get origin to scan the folders by changing the install directory within the origin options.

I know it is possible as I did this for BF3. Was originally downloaded on the spindle HDD, then moved the directory over to the SSD. Changed the origin games/download directory and did a games refresh. It picked it up and verified the data and I switched my settings back to the spindle HDD.

Game works fine. Same thing worked for ME3.

That being said, steam is light years ahead of origin in terms of backing up your downloads.

I really don't like how steam installs everything to one directory (excluding 3rd party tools to switch data to a different directory). Unless Steam changed that functionality, I like how Origin can switch directories for the game installs/downloads from where Origin is installed to.

that's a sore spot for steam. You can't tell it where to download its crap, but Origin can.

It's a very basic functionality that should've been there circa 2005, but isn't for whatever bizarre reason.

I could say the same for episode 3 too though, so /shrug.

Steam deals with tons of independent developers whereas Origin is pretty much only EA. Origin might offer a little flexibility right now with it's handful of games, but Steam had to provide a standard to go by. I really can't blame them because at the time they were doing something that had never been attempted before at that scale.

I'm more pissed at developers for storing their files in the My Documents and C:\Users\*** directories. I'm tired of having settings files and saved games not being in obvious places.

As for Origin, do they have anything equivilent to Steam Backup? Steam deserves a +1 for having such a useful backup system.

I did ^this, when I moved from HDD to SSD.

That is slightly incorrect. Origin was EA only, however there are now 3rd party games sold and distributed via Origin.
