So the other day I was at my friend's house and we decide to play NHL98 for PS1 just for the hell of it, after playing this year's ESPN Hockey for 2 hours straight, and in addition, I had played 3 games of NHL2004 the previous night. Well we were quite surprised. We put it in thinking we'd take it back out within 5 minutes laughing with disgust, but we found that it was quite good. Much better, in fact, than the new ones. Controls were great, nice and simple and easy. Animations were great, the skaters moved quite realistically for the resolution. Graphics... well, obviously this area can't compare. For the commentary, the people were funny, had lots of nicknames for players, and just in general it seemed like a more natural commentary with less awkward things happening. We ended up having about 2 hours of good fun, us 6 people gathered over one copy of NHL98.
It really makes me sad... after playing that again, NHL2004 will never seem the same. It's got a lot going for it, but I think that through the years, EA has lost more than it's improved.
