How could the NFL allowed such a deal.

They just created a monopoly for EA, and madden.

Very unfair, especially since nfl 2k5 is cheaper, and and deeper.

Well, EA has similiar deals in other sports, and hey, Madden 64 didn't have a licence and I still bought it, so anything is possible.

btw, your shift key was stuck

That attitude gets you really far in a capitalist system.

i JUST heard about this like 5 minutes ago ... here is a link if you didnt read yet. the first year i actually enjoy ESPN more than madden, they lose the rights to the NFL.

i honestly hope that ESPN still does fine w/out the liscense, even better than EA does, because i think this is crap for EA to do. i did not have any disliking for EA until i read that article about how the developers are overworked at the office. that was this past year, and also this past year, i actually enjoyed ESPN NFL 2K5 more than madden, which I usually don't do. usually, madden steals the prize from me, but not this year.

i think ESPN has alot of followers, and I honestly don't think that not having the rights to the NFL will hurt them too much. i think the loyal fans will still stay around. the only audience it will hurt are the newcomers to football games, ones who haven't really played either game in the past. they will most likely go for madden again. but if ESPN puts that $20 tag on the games again, they could still eat up EA.

maybe this was EA's way at getting back at ESPN for the $20 price tag? anyone know the total sales figures of madden vs. espn ?

But on the bright side, nothing could be more worthless than NFL 2K5. Seriously, just try to convince me that having to tap a button to run fast is a good idea. In Madden, I juke, stiff-arm, and spin. When I'm tapping A (on XBox) to run, I can't do any of those things. G@Y!!!

If ESPN had grown up and figured out how to make a real game, this would have bothered me more. As it is, I'm a Madden lover, and I honestly believe they'll still make a better game every year.

I can't imagine how much EA put on the table. You know it had to be a ton.

I think it's a shame this deal happened. Wonder if other companies will just take the NCAA route and put everyone in just without names or proper names. You could always change the rooster file and fill in the names.

Think about it...EA had to offer more than they would have normally received by licensing each game out. Man, I really hope they take it in the rear with some of the lawsuits their programmers are starting to file.

apparently you are still stuck in the closet. they haven't made a 'better' game in the past 3 years.

madden has been the SAME EXACT GAME for the past 3 years. the games play %100 the same, with MAYBE the game running a little faster, or some gimmicky new features like little moves. they still have the same exact control, the same stupid stuff that happens (players dropping WIDE OPEN PASSES on a regular, the slow animations, the same 5 types of tackles), and nothing innovative aside from the whole franchise stuff, which i don't care for at all. and if you think the control is limited on ESPN, like i said, you are stuck in the closet and haven't even played the game.

espn looks so more authentic. the hits look real. in madden, you can hit someone and the animation for the tackle just looks so off half of the time. the physics of the hits in madden cannot even COMPARE to ESPN. not to mention, the ESPN liscensing is awesome, it looks like you are watching sunday night football when you play a game.

i used to HATE the 2K series until i actually gave ESPN a good chance this year, at its $20 price tag. and this year, i would definitely have to say that ESPN kicked the shlt out of madden. its way more enjoyable of a game to play.

This is absolute crap! ESPN was definitely the better product this year, and cheaper, too. I actually bought both games this year to give them a side-by-side fair comparison, and ESPN NFL 2K5 won (IMO) with on plans to buy Madden next year. Well, I'm sticking to those plans. Just because it's the only game in town doesn't mean I have to buy it.

Is it fair? Sure! It's a free market. Was it a smart move by the NFL? In the short-term, yes! They were paid well. As for the long run: I don't think so. Competition breeds progress, and without head-to-head competition, EA can put out another lackluster release next year.

you said it perfectly. the only way to really see that ESPN is the better game is to play both of them. i can understand all the Madden lovers still liking madden, because it hasn't changed in years. its still the same game, so why would they dislike it if they used to like it?

what bothers me are the madden fanbois who, without even playing ESPN, are like "ESPN SUCKS!" and i will be the first to admit, i used to be like that, until i gave ESPN a chance. madden fanbois who try out ESPN automatically hate it because the first thing they do, when they play the first play is say something like "this sucks, madden does it this way " ... " or madden does it that way, its better". they expect the game to be the SAME EXACT thing as madden! well FYI, its a different game! so yes, its going to play alot different! and it does! and it actually is alot more fun, you just have to actually give it a chance!

On a scarier note for these same publishers, rumors are already circulating that EA is attempting to negotiate similar deals with the NBA and Major League Baseball.

Fvck that. I will never buy another EA sports game ever again.

i don't know if i would go that far. i know EA didn't develop Burnout 3, but they had something to do with it (maybe publish it?). but i put halo 2 down for a few days and started playing burnout 3 again on xbox live, and MAN is this game so much fun!

If I were ESPN, I'd develop a game that was identical to the NFL except with different names for the players and stadiums. Then make it all editable. Next pay some private developers some money under the table or just get some enthusiasts to make a batch editing program that would transform it into real NFL players and whatnot.

As much as I love many of the games they've published (NFSU2, Burnout 3, LOTR:ROTK, Sims 2), I cant in my right mind give them another dime.

One, the deal is fair. It's no more an unfair monopoly than Nintendo having a monopoly on "Mario" games. The "NFL" has essentially become an EA "character". Yes, it's basically a death sentence for the other pro-football franchises, but it's not a monopoly. Other companies can still make football games, they just can't use the NFL.

Two, the complaints that Madden has been the same for years are pretty exaggerated. They have tried to add/change modes each year. But it's football, the rules are the same every year so there really isn't much to change other than create a bunch more worthless modes most people don't even use. But I will agree that the graphics could use some work. It's seems like their games over the past couple of years have fallen a bit behind in that department. Still, their games are generally rated as high or better than their competitors. Some people prefer Madden, some prefer ESPN.

Football fans are going to need to hope EA's competitors concentrate on making top quality college football titles. That will hopefully force EA into keeping the quality up in both their pro and college titles.

I'm finished with EA sports games. They lost my NHL business last year, and my NFL business this year shortly after Madden 2005's release. With this move, it's obvious they don't want to compete on a level playing field and don't care about how their gamers are affected. Money money money is all that's important to them, but they won't get any more from me!

you lose all credibility of your statement from making probably the stupidest opening line i have ever read in the history of ATOT.

Nintendo CREATED mario, as well as many other franchises. Last time i checked, EA had nothing to do with creating the NFL.

Listen in terms of business, its a great move. But for video game is not.

A sport game without liscence is not the same with one.

If nfl 2k5 came out without it, it would have not sold as well, and not be as good, just for the fact we can't play with the players, and teams we love.
