Well, there is a chance they could use CryEngine for a new title. EA has the resources to do it right, will they? Who knows, but perhaps Bioware would be willing to dust off Knights of the Old Republic?

Everyone hates EA, but they are one of the very few companies with the resources to actually do Star Wars games the way they deserve.

I wonder if EA would be nearly as willing given the relatively poor performance of The Old Republic. I don't think they want to spend that much on a game again to only make a modest profit.

If they stick to what worked from the previous titles in the series it wouldn't be that difficult to make the game quality. Just update it with a new engine.

An MMO is quite different from a single player RPG too. Very few MMOs really stand the test of time.

Well, if they let DICE do a Republic Commando remake, I'd buy it. I'd probably pick up a Crytek one as well.

So far no titles have been announced and it's wait and see. I look at the game on the disk. If it sucks it doesn't matter who made it. If it's good I'll buy it regardless of the name on the box.

Whelp, this is bad news. Mind you, it's not as if LucasArts was doing a stellar job over the last decade.

Well at least SOMETHING will get made and published now. They've got the money to get stuff out, if nothing else.
Plus a Frostbite 3 powered Battlefront 3 doesn't sound horrible. Tack a Star Wars mod on top of Battlefield 4 even, done.

I gotta agree. Bioware obviously could do well with it.

They've got some talented studios that could really make something interesting. Criterion made Pod Racer?

I'm just not that big into Star Wars any more to really care that much, it was ruined before EA had it.

There is Bioware, but TOR wasn't exactly a runaway success for them. EA has said they want to move away from single player games. I wouldn't hold my breath for anything remotely resembling KOTOR 3.

The deal is most likely the result of Disney wanting to make movie based games for the upcoming sequels.

This.

Pretty much the only hope will be the next films NOT sucking, and thereby having a chance of having some decent games made. Even then, that doesn't mean much.
But clearly, EA/Disney is going to be looking to cash in on the new films, and most (all?) their releases will somehow be tied to them.

Yup...

Incomplete, bugged, rushed, and rehashed 50 times, milked to death with 100 special editions and zero day paid DLC?

Lucas himself, the master of dead horse beating, wouldn't have it any other way.

Lucas + EA = match made in heaven for each other.

I think they said they're going to be original games.

Yep:
These imaginative teams will make games that may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories.

Games based on specific movies just don't work so no one wants to do them. Penny Arcade Report did an article that explains why those types of games are likely to not be made any more. I think them not wanting to just hash out games like that is why Disney decided to can the LucasArts game stuff and license it instead.

George Lucas doesn't own star wars anymore to begin with.

I'd rather have EA on this than Activision myself. At least you have DICE and Visceral on board

The Star Wars franchise is one of the most popular franchises of all time, of course exdeath hates it. At least he didn't go into how it will be on the "FPSBox" or "Star Wars: CoD".

The reality is EA has Bioware, Dice, and Crytek that could do amazing things with this IP. I don't see a Crysis type game, but an RPG could easily materialize.

It shouldn't be too hard to put together a game along the lines of Knights of the Old Republic using the Mass Effect engine right?

Well, I don't know exactly how well the ME engine holds up in turn based gameplay, but I'd guess whatever engine they used for DA:O would be perfect for a new KotoR game. Now, I doubt they will use that setting as they already have ToR establishing that. Maybe a "current" Star Wars universe RPG. Taking place after Episode VI, but before Episode VII. Perhaps something from the expanded universe like from the Old, old times before ToR.

The gameplay is easy. The dialog, story, and atmosphere are what really needs to be done well. ToR was good in those aspects, but being an MMO, it obviously lacked the real epic story that Star Wars encompasses. Episodes 1-6 follow the rise and fall and inevitable rise through his son of Anakin. KOTOR 1 and 2 followed the rise (and if you chose, fall) of the Republic, as well as your character, through the story. ToR just didn't have that. Granted I only finished a couple of the story lines.

sometimes something is not better than nothing.

sometimes (frequently) EA's "somethings" function only to drain wallets and aggrivate customers beyond measure.

And no Star Wars games for the WiiU.

EA's 'Star Wars' games unlikely to appear on Wii U, demanding Frostbite 3 engine to blame

http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/7/4309470/ea-star-wars-games-wii-u-unlikely-due-to-frostbite-3-engine

EA is full of shit on that one because CryTek 3 is running on WiiU and Crytek CEO confirmed a game in development using the engine. Crytek 3 will likely still be more demanding than Fristbite 3.

Further, the WiiU is confirmed as powerful as an Xbox 360 and PS3 with more vram and perhaps a bit more powerful. So if they can get Battlefield 3 running on PS3 with all its limitations...yeah I don't buy that crap from EA. EA is still butthurt because Nintendo snubbed them in the past as they did with most 3rd party devs not based in Japan.

my thinking, who wants to build a game in 2014-2016 for hardware that matches the specs available 2005?

Then why are they releasing Battlefield 4 for PS3 and 360 hm??

That is not the reason. EA doesn't even release any games on the DS but has pledged support for the Vita. Odd no?

Nintendo alienated a lot of devs with their high priced dev kits andlack of support to developers in the past. Not just during the Wii era either. It goes way back. Many developers felt pushed aside as if Nintendo didn't want their games.
