Electronic Arts has announced that it has completed its tender offer to the shareholders of Battlefield developer Digital Illusions (DICE), and now owns a controlling 59.8% interest in the company. EA also owns warrants, which if exercised, can bump their stake in the company's share sto 67.3%.

Here's to hoping Vivendi buys out blizzard and valve

Thankfully all the good employees already left blizzard and valve... well I just plain don't like valve.

Blizzard is owned by Vivendi. Vevendi has had several law suits with valve and have attempted to gain the rights of the HL series from Valve. I would much prefer activision buy Vivendi's game division and Valve. But that is very wishfull thinking, Activision is not great but they are better than EA

Seems like id Software will soon be the only freestanding gaming house.
Sucks, a relative of mine is one of the two founders of Digital Illusions, gotta ask him how many shares he still holds...

Vivendi buying anything is not a good thing. That's like saying "Heres hoping EA aquires more rediculous sports contracts".

This isn't really new news. EA announced they were going to buy DICE a few months ago. This doesn't bother me as much, because I can't really tell you anything else that DICE has developed besides Battlefield: 1942.

You just haven't been watching for very long.
They became famous for their pinball games, Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies.
Still the best pinball games ever made, back in the good old days of the Amiga.

Yep, took the two of them some 5 years to complete Pinball Dreams, using Amigas IIRC.

I hope for both. For one thing, EA is known for making the best sports games. Why not let them do their thing? For another, Vivendi seems to be smarter than Valve, so I hope they do buy them. That would mean no more steam.

EA: The MS of the gaming industry.

--Actually, it'd be funny if EA bought out MS's gaming division. Might as well gobble up another game developer.

Activision is getting acquired shortly by Murdoch, and then there is Take2(who puts fear into EA- likely a reason for their recent acquisition binge). You also have Sony, Nintendo and MS- EA is just buying up a lot of tiny little houses; their attempt at acquiring UbiSoft is the only serious acquisition news of note relatively recently.

Honestly, I think people significantly overestimate the level of power EA has in the gaming industry. Less then four years ago they were still a distant second in gaming software sales. They are growing very fast and have been for years, but Take2 is growing faster.
