E8600 coming, concerned about BIOS upgrade

Well, I certainly won't be using any Asus upgrading utilities ever again. Particularly ASUS Update. Stay away from that like the plague - Windows-based BIOS update utility. Utter crap. I posted a thread on that awhile back, sent in my motherboard, and ASUS turned it around pretty fast and the system is crankin' along again.

So I'll be using the BIOS update utility that's in the BIOS itself, with the new BIOS on a thumb drive. Anyone ever have problems with this approach?

The ASUS P5E-VM HDMI board is what I'm using (see my sig) and a new E8600 is going into it. I'll experiment with the stock cooler first, just popping in the new chip with the existing BIOS first to see if I actually need the upgrade (I actually find the Intel coolers easy to work with (ask me how!) and then install the ThermalTake Ruby Orb I bought, which is the best low-profile cooler I can find...

So the Asus windows based thing is worth avoiding for real? Have heard complaints from a few on here...

I'm still running the BIOS my P5Q PRO came with (seems fine), but have been tempted to flash to the newest one.

Will follow your thread for instructions with keen interest

don't use any of the asus utilities to update your bios, definitely use the ez flash thumb drive to flash the bios. i've done it twice already on my asus p5q board with no problems.

There was a thread recently in which someone said that ASUS tech support told him that they don't recommend people use the Windows flash utility they include.

Sounds like they really have their act together.

I've updated my IP35-E's bios three times in Windows with their supplied utility with no problems at all.

I think that was my thread! Here it is. But yeah, I have also used BIOS-based functions for updating in the past and never had an issue. I've also successfully used WinFlash in the past, but it isn't supported by Vista 64, and it's superannuated by the BIOS function anyway.

Good to know others have had success there...
