E8500 @ 4.5Ghz

Welcome to the forums.
If "she" freezes up when you are loading CS, that means "she" is so very unstable. I really don't think you can have 4.5 ghz on just 1.3 V. You probably have a lot of tweaking and Vcore upping until total stability. Use OCCT-Linpack test for stability.

Thanks for the quick reply. This is just a starting point really. I'm brand new to intel after being with amd for so long. Its just nice actually getting some nice overclocks out of a processor. 🙂

Vcore is set at 1.36 in the bios but cpuz reads 1.328.. "Shrugs"

I would try to stabilize it now and see what that vcore can really give me, probably less then 4.5ghz stable. Upping it further might be a bit risky since you are at the upper edge of what Intel recommends for these chips, although I'm running mine at 1.43 V in bios, but that's just me and I don't advise you to do the same. 😉

Error,

I upped it to 1.36 and Crysis and CS play fine now. The freezing and loading problems went away. I'm on water so i'm not scared to go higher BUT i think i'm done till i get some 1066 DDR2. I believe i'm at the limit with my DDR2 800.

I really want 5Ghz and i'll be satisfied 🙂

5ghz stable is possible if you've got a great chip, but even then you'll need closer to 1.4+ volts. It sounds like you are inexperienced with this sorta thing, read the sticky and do proper stability testing. Like other guy said, if its crashing in games then its not even close to stable. A close to stable cpu will be fine for a few hours or days and then blue screen of death on you.

Tid,

Totally agree. Not a newbie to overclocking just to intel. 🙂

I guess you just found out that overclocking Intel chips is a bit easier then it was with AMD. 😉

Error,

Don't even get me started on the Phenom series stability when it comes to overclocking. They're great chips but they don't overclock like this.

well the phenom2 720 for the money is a fantastic overclocker. an avg overclock of 3.7ghz w/ three cores @ $145 its a much better deal than an 8400 IMHO.🙂 the unlocked multiplier makes overclocking easy & breezy.

Link me when an average joe break's 4ghz 🙂

How many hours of Prime 95 or OCCT/Linpack have you tested it with? Nice chip if it is stable!

Prime was stable for over an hour at 4.5Ghz. I don't have the patience to run that shit for hours and hours. No crashes, games play perfect and benchmarks all worked fine.

Skip linpack, its just a heat test not a stability test. I recommend you leave p95 on overnight though if you want to know if its stable or not. Otherwise you'll find out down the road when your playing cs:s and it blue screens and your windows install corrupts and you have to format (possible). Nice job btw, welcome to the 500 club.

OP, that's a very nice OC!

I'm curious about people saying that it's difficult to OC AMD. On my A64's --> X2's, I've always been able to get 30-50% OC's. My Phenom 9850 is good for about a 30% OC (though I run it at 20%), but A) it's common knowledge Agena isn't a great OC'er and B) it was free.

Where did you figured that out? I ran Prime 95 5 hours straight and it gave me no error. Used Linpack for 10 minutes and it failed. Linpack is much more stressful then Prime 95 and because it also gives you higher then normal temps, what does that tell you? That is weaker then Prime?

Well there will be no 5Ghz today. 🙁

Memory won't take anymore. Even loosened the timing to 6-6-6-18 and it was still a no go. Ohh well. I can live with 4.5Ghz for a few days. 🙂

Link me when average joes and not review sites routinely get 3.7ghz!!! i haven't seen that and it a bit too early to start pulling numbers out of places...

This is exactly what ppl said about the 940 and 920's yet averages haven't been living up to review sites there as well.....

Exactly.....so prime95 already being an unrealistic real world example stressing a cpu/cache etc in ways that no real world apps uses just points to the fact of why Linpack is not needed....

Prime95 already loads my chips 7-8c higher then anything I have been able to duplicate on it with apps I use....so WHAT DAMN GOOD does linpack heating it another 8-10c have to do for me? except possibly damage it!!!

As long as I have been 24-48 hours prime95 stable with all cores running I have never ran into a stability issue (except with crappy gskill memory when it fails because it was just over-rated shite anyways)

I dont mind OCCT, but bottomline prime95 does just fine.....And take that from a person who does DCC and doesn't get errors, EEU's, etc.

Best i could squeeze out of my 940 X4 was 3.8Ghz and i'm on water. Thing was a heat pump so i returned it and went for the 8500. Once the Core I5's come out i'll be stepping up again
