E8400 vs Athlon II X2 255 AM3. Customer build.

Hi guys, I was wondering what would be the better processor for a build I am doing for a customer. Primary things that will be done will be image manipulation (dental x-rays). Browsing the web, storing tons of documents, watching movies in SD and HD, using Microsoft Office, excel, basically the whole suite. Personally I have had the E8400 for years now and its great but Im surprised the price has not moved much from what I remember. I like the size of the on-die cache but the AMD is a lot cheaper and should compare similar right? I like the fact that it has the on-die memory controller but turned off by the low on-die cache size. Anyone can chime in? Thanks a bunch.

I believe the Athlon II will be a bit slower despite similar clock speeds. However, from a price to performance standpoint, it's a much better value. It should be able to handle anything the customer needs from what you're describing, though.
 
Yeah, 8400 is the superior chip, but that platform will cost as much as any 1156 platform (Intel's latest mainstream offering). An Athlon X2 250 will be more than adequate for the tasks you've mentioned; the only one I've never done is dental image stuff, but if it's similar to doing photoshop, you won't have any issues.
 
The E8400 is faster, but I wouldn't even consider it. You can get an I3 or even an AMD quad core for less. E8400 looses price/performance in almost any way possible when cheaper chips out perform it.
 
The E8400 is still $167?!?!?!?!? 😱

It has become quite overpriced, you can get a Phenom 2 965 for less. Heck, you can get an i3 530 for less too. why would anyone still buy that thing?
