BlueWeasel, a Q9550 should work fine.
However, it's unlikely you'll be able to OC it quite as high as your E8400 due to your mobo.
As you already know, it's also going to make little difference in games.

I'd say you should save up for an i5 750 system TBH...

But if you can score a Q9550 for cheap, there's no harm either per say.

I've been wondering, is a 9550 faster clock per clock than a 955 BE?

Yes.

Thanks for the info.

I'm currently running at 432x9 = 3.89Ghz with the E8400.

I know that getting 3.9Ghz out of a Q9550 will be difficult, if not impossible, with my current MB and RAM. Assuming the C2Q is a decent overclocker, any reason why I can't expect at least 432x8.5? Or will the C2Q likely result in a significantly lower stable FSB?

Depending on the review, the Q9550 is faster than the 955. At the very least, they're comparable with each CPU having different strengths.

That shouldn't be too bad of an overclock at all.

Meh, you could just do a 400 like me and run your ram 1:1 but it's up to you. It's stable at 3.4 without any tweaks just drop it in and change FSB.

I had a ip35e with e7xxx chip was making this choice q9550 vs am2+ upgrade ended up choosing 785g//x4 620, after selling off the ip35e/e7xxx I put up about 35 dollars to go quad route not too bad. but if you can get a cheapo c1 of q9550 then it's a way to go. e0 might not be compatible even after beta bios flash.

I suggest you sell your 8400/mb/ram and get a new system running! everybody likes new stuff and we need to stimulate the economy! :)
