E8400 to Q9550

I have been running a E8400 @ 4.05GHZ for ~2 years. I was thinking of upgrading to a Q9550 ($179). What OC (4GHZ??) can I get out of the Q9550? What temps\voltage would I expect from the Q9550?

I have a Gigabyte X38 DS4 mobo running at 450MHZ FSB with DDR2 1066 memory running at 900MHZ. I run the cpu @ 1.3V and this has been stable since I built it ~2 years ago. The E8400 runs at about 30-45C. I just purchased a Sapphire 5850 for $279 from NewEgg last weekend and I know it is limited it in several multi-threaded games.

Go for it. The X38 and X48 were the same chipset, except the X48 were binned higher. So you might not be able to get quite as high a FSB on the X38. Probably depends on luck of the draw. I dont know what the max FSB is on an X48 with a 45nm quad-core. I know that P35 boards topped out at around 410-420 FSB on a good board. But P45 boards can hit 450 or higher.

450 FSB on a Q9550 is something like 3.8Ghz, I think.

Thanks for the reply! I agree with you as I have it currently running at 450FSB and as long as the Q9550 can run at that speed I should be ok. I would be happy with 3.8GHZ.

Any idea what voltage I would need to get 3.8?

The newer E0s should be capable of that at around 1.3v or even less, I have an older C1 Q9550 that needs 1.35v to be stable at 3.8GHz.

4Ghz with an 8400 is like bally dancers dancing on a glass flooring
4Ghz with a Q9550 is like The Biggest Loser contestants doing bally on a glass flooring.

I would shoot for 3.6 - 3.75Ghz just to keep the temps down.

I actually had a little trouble hitting 4.0 on my 9550 (with good temps that is). Right now I'm running it at 3.6ghz (I can't remember the voltage right now, on laptop) idling around 30c and loading under 50c.

Well put. I will shoot for 3.8ghz. Thanks.

Erm, "Ballet"?

Or did you mean "belly" dancers?

FSB overclock with dual != FSB overclock with quad

Way more stress on the lines between CPU and northbridge - more cross talk etc. Shoot for 450 but don't be disappointed if you get 410-420. That is a good overclock for and x38 chipset.

You guys seem to be forgetting that the op is running 8GB of ram, thats not exactly going to help his clocks. I don't see anything less than a P45 being up for the job.

I think that you would be better off with an i5 750 if you can fetch a good price for your rig, personally.

Switching to an i5 will cost him at least another $300 with the motherboard and RAM alone. I was in the same boat a while back, and the price for DDR3 is just killing the deal.

I personally don't think the OP is gonna see a great deal of difference in games because with a Core 2 Duo @4GHz, most games will be GPU bound, specially at high resolution. I have my Q9550 up to 3.8GHz on an old Asus P5B-D (P965 chipset), but I eventually stepped back to 3.6GHz as the increased voltage and heat output wasn't worth it. Performance nearly doubled in every CPU intensive applications I run with two extra cores, but I would be hardly pressed to tell the difference between 3.6 and 3.8GHz.

All good arguments price and performance. Keep in mind if his board isn't up to the task that will bite into the price of the Q9550 and he will be able to sell his current board and ram. You can also typically find an i5 750 for less than a Q9550. I picked up a Giga P55A UD3 and a 2X2GB kit of Corsair XMS3 a couple of weeks back for $200 from Newegg which isn't too bad. Just another option to think about.

a quad core for 179 and 3.8ghz sounds great... i have never had the awesome luck as it seems most people do. To bad no microcenter around here.
