I have a MC down the street from where I work, guess I should have waited before buying a new CPU.

Just got back from MC NY with my e8400
$190, and the guy was friendly and knowledgable
it looked like they had at least 20 left
(yes, even though they don't have it on their website and the box is labeled $239.99)

I can't believe I have my cpu now and my 3870 arrives next week. :frown:

LOL I was just at MC about 30 min ago and walked right by the CPU case without even a second glance. I went and looked at the SATA cables didnt see what I wanted and left.

Was just at MC and bought a E8400 on impulse. They were carrying some from the lockup area and I just couldn't resist. :(

No, I literally just got back from the store. I probably won't install for a few days yet. Like I said, it was an impulse buy (wallet just wasn't hard enough to open.)

Three other people had the same problem I did. :D

Nah I dont need one, already running at 3.6 which is more then enough for gaming and surfing the net. I do probably have one closer to me then most people its about 5 minutes and that includes stop lights.

Your MC must have different clientelle than mine, all I see when I walk through there is people asking if they're out of 'those Linkski wireless hubs' and if they have any printers free after rebate. They wouldn't know a processor if you stuck it in their eye.

The local MC appears to have an amazing turnover on motherboards. Go in one day the shelves are almost bare, go in a couple days later they are restocked. What good is a motherboard without a processor, video card, memory, power supply ... Yep, the move a lot of all of those too.

They really have no local competition.

EDIT Oh yeah, only about 20% of the employees don't have a clue about what they are selling (and they generally stay away from the hardware area)

There's another difference then, maybe 20% of my store's salespeople have any clue what they're selling. All of them avoid customers as much as possible, their pay must not depend on sales at all even though they do put those stickers on the stuff they sell you.

I heard one of them today selling a computer to an older couple, explaining why they needed the one with the 'high-end' 8500GT rather than the budget system.

They do have a corner on the market though, I live in a big city and they're the only ones with every computer component. BB has motherboards sometimes but their pricing is a joke. CompUSA was always expensive and is now going OOB.

The MC salesmen against the Frys salesmen in battle of the knowledge, who would win.

Gawd, Fry's sucks SO badly... I used to love them, but the ones in Sunnyvale and Palo Alto are just terrible. I've always thought well of Micro Center. Certainly you need to know what you're doing in either place.

I think Frys has GOT to be the worst place on the face of the earth to buy an HDTV set. The ones I've mentioned are lamentably disorganized and won't even let you see content you want before you buy a set. Plus I think their prices are far too high.

FYI, Micro Center adopted "pricematching" to online prices for CPUs several months ago. So they are now much more competitive, with the difference boiling down to sales tax vs. shipping cost.

With local sales tax, an E8400 at MC costs $0.18 more than what I paid for mine via BUY.CON.

Went to the Santa Clara store earlier today, didn't see the E8400 anywhere on display, in the Processor cabinet, or on the list of Processors they had for sale. This was probably first time I've ever been to a store where I was browsing, for more than 5 minutes, and wasn't asked once "Can I help you with anything?" Heh.
