You would have a better chance spending $15 more on E8400.
E8200 500fsb x 8 = 4.0GHz
E8400 444fsb x 9 = 4.0GHz

or better yet (and cheaper), e7200: 421 X 9.5
not all e7200s will hit 4ghz though. but they get darn close enough and for $50 cheaper than a e8400

Yup, was gonna say look at the E7200.

It's a nice budget beast.

BS.

Find a benchmark showing this massive drop in performance due to less cache, & not one @ 640x480 either please...

ip35-e is best budget oc board.

doing this on the cheap.

also, i'll think about e7200 but cache affect gaming performance dramatically

It doesn't effect things that much. It makes a big difference when we are comparing 1MB vs 4MB, but 3MB vs 6MB is nowhere near as dramatic, its the law of diminishing returns kicking in.

An E8400 is between 5 - 10% faster clock for clock in gaming due to the larger cache, so an E7200 @ 4GHz is roughly equal to a 3.6 - 3.8GHz E8400, which is still pretty fast.

Okay...you're making insane demands here and just thoroughly talking crap. The E7200 will be able to handle just about anything fine given that you have the graphical power to do it. Not enough cache? Yeah right... And you're not guaranteed to hit 4.0GHz. You talk about that stuff like it's a given or something. It's not!

If you want really good frame rates in Crysis, wait another year or two. I always like playing yesterday's games on today's technology. And it's STILL good eyecandy.

Your current CPU has enough umph to handle Crysis alright, an e7200 will only be faster (possibly much faster) regardless of cache.

I've read that on average, the e8400 can hit 4.4ghz, whereas the e7200 usually only hits 3.6ghz. If that's the case, the e8400 is worth the extra $40 IMO.

4.4GHz average? No way, at least not on air. I'd say the average would be closer to ~4.0GHz with a decent HSF. An E7200 probably clocks slightly worse overall - I've seen a hit 4GHz, but most fall just short of that mark.

3.6 with 6mb L2 cache is fast. I only noticed it when I put my 3870 inplace of my 1900XTX ...you already have memory that'll have 33mhz left over if you run a 500fsb with an 8200 but that'll be alot on the mobo & North Bridge ...if you do decide to do that, might i suggest a high level techie tip? If you have a case where the pci slots are on the lower part of the case & your vid card is upside down, take a 80mm fan and rest it ontop of the vid card and face it towards the NB heatsink, it works wonders!

I would get DS3L/IP35E coupled with a E7200 which can go to about 4Ghz. with 450FSB. Just make sure you got some nice (as DDR1000) rams on hand. Also get yourself a Xigmatec or something good for cooling it. Then you all set to go 4Ghz. Games should be fine as well at that speed.
