I am building a workstation for some scientific modeling. here's the applications and requirements
  • - multithreaded app under linux
  • - single threaded app under win
  • - need about 1.5GB of memory
Now, Intel recommends 860+RDRAM for calculation-intensive workstations. But 1.5GB or RDRAM is damn way too expensive. So i been thinking i can just get e7500+DDR and save $1K or so.

Any thoughts about performance benchmarks on these two platforms? I'd appreciate.

btw, I am planning to use dual Xeons 2.4GHz, 512MB from newegg for $266. Isn't that a killer deal?

also, Tyan i7500 board is probably better than e7500, any comments anyone?
