LoL some goofballs in another thread actually insulted me when I tried to gently explain that a Q6600 would blow away a 6750 when both were overclocked. Oh well, no accounting for intelligence I suppose.

So from a gaming standpoint you think its worth the extra $ to go quad core? I am currently specing out a new system for myself.

I have an Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme w/ a nice cooled case and I want to OC my new proccessor to the max.

The system will primarly be used for gaming.

Acording to that review - only ONE game actully showed a decent increase in perforamce?

Also: The review says the proccessors are priced the same. Newegg says different:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 Conroe 3.0GHz = $299

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz = $279.00

All of the games showed a WORSE FPS other than Lost planet... Is it worth it????

You're looking at non-OC performance. With a 3-3.4Ghz O/C on the Q6600, you get all the single/dual-core performance of the 6850, but on things that use the Quad, you'll see massive improvements. Encoding movies, audio, etc will show huge gains NOW, and many many upcoming games (Alan Wake esp.) are supposed to be Quad-optimized.

Of course, if you were not going to overclock, then the 6850 will be better in today's games than a stock 6600.

EDIT: You also missed the part where the 6600 @ stock 2.4Ghz outperformed the 6850 overclocked to 3.85Ghz.

Summary : if you're overclocking, there's pretty much zero excuse to buy a 6850 over a Q6600. The only other reasonable choice would be a cheap dual-core (E6320, etc), and overclock it like crazy, getting beyond 6850 performance for half the $$.

$300 is a lot of money for a CPU. If all I am doing is gaming. Would it be better for me to buy a Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz for $199 and OC that with my Thermaltake ultra 120 as far as it can go (how far is that BTW?) And then take that extra 100 dollars and spend it on a better video card?

I was looking to get the EVGA 320-P2-N811-AR GeForce 8800GTS 320MB. I don't think the 640MB version is worth the extra $100 im only going to be playing games at 1680x1050.

If you're just going dual-core+overclock, then the 6750 is a non-starter. Get an E4400 @ $125, then crank it to 3Ghz+, won't be more than a small % off of the 6750 in most things. The extra $75 can then be applied towards something important like an extra 2gb of ddr2, or maybe the 640mb version of the GTS. If you're lucky, maybe a used 8800GTX on the forums.

If all you are doing is gaming and you have a set budget where it's Q6600 and say X1950Pro vs. a cheaper processor and say 8800GTS 320, then get the faster graphics card no questions asked.

Something like E6400 2.13ghz for $150 should be excellent. In my previous system I had that processor clocked to 3.4ghz on a Big Typhoon. It's a solid choice. They also have E6320 for $125.

I'd also suggest picking up this ram if you didnt buy already - OCZ PC6400 2GB Reaper CL4 - $55
