E6750 TO E8500???

I can only get my E6750 to go to 3.4 with my current ram... Would it be worth while to jump up to an E8500 from my E6750?

I mostly game that's it. And surf the net... but don't really do anything that would make a quad worthwhile...

What's your take?

I guess I'm trying to figure out if I should upgrade my cpu... because I'm upgrading my video card to the GTX 260 core 216/4870 1GB or higher level.

Conroe ----> Wolfdale is a personal preference. Your average user would never notice a difference.

For the enthusiasts, it is usually worth it, especially if your motherboard can go 45nm with a simple BIOS update.

If it is worth it or not really depends on your disposable income, and how much you enjoy seeing 4.Xghz when your computer boots ;)

I wouldn't do it. It will offer just a marginal performance increase. Better add more $ and get a faster videocard, that will improve your gaming experience much more then a cpu upgrade.

no!!!!!!!. I upgraded from E6600 w/ P5WDH intel 975x chipset to E8400 and IP35 Pro so i can tell you with first hand experience, that it's not worth spending extra $ for MINIMAL performance increase. I spent WAY too much money for that upgrade and i regret it  Just get a decent GFX card like an 8800GT and 4 gigs of ram, and you'll be a happy camper!

well he currently has an 8800gt and is upgrading to 4870/gtx260.

I'd say go for it, if you don't have to upgrade your mobo, you should still get some money for your old cpu.

I think I'm going to figure out what GPU to get when the nVidia refresh comes out next month and then I will figure out if I need to go with a better CPU... as it is right now I'm not bound by CPU bottleneck it's more of a GPU issue. I don't know if I can get $$$ for my E6750 as I have put it through the ringer. It's been on 4 different MSI 680i mobo's all rma'd and finally it's on my P5Q-E which is a nice mobo and is a P45 variant so I'm good to go with 45nm.

why not hold on to your 6750, give it a little lap and get that sucker up to 3.8Ghz until you have some $$$ to spend on a Core i7 setup?
regardless the mainstream and enthousiast users, all you will see is 1 gazillion 3dmark points from 6750 to .1 extra gazillion points when you have that 8xxx C2D up @ 4GHz.

But hey, if you think it's worth spending all that hard earned cash in seeing 4.9% increase, then that's your thing . . .

why?

Cuz you want 4ghz?

Thats the only reason i see now.

If anything maybe getting a QUADCORE would be better. At least it would allow you to hold onto your system under ANY condition while neha settles down.

Wasn't really going for the 4ghz... but it would be nice, I was just thinking it my bottleneck a 4870x2 or gtx 280. Which are the two cards I'm looking at now...

That's pretty much the reason I did it.

I went for an e8600 and I'm quite happy with it.

The people telling you to go for it are people who aren't spending the cash on what would be a very minimal upgrade. You would probably be better off buying an even better video card, saving toward a better monitor or speakers/headphones, or even buying a super fancy lian li case or something that will last years. Or perhaps better still, just save the cash and enjoy the new video card, they'll go well together, your old processor and the new card.

I think you are talking about very little real world difference in that upgrade. I have been considering it as well as my CPU has been deteriorating from a 3.6ghz OC down to 3.2 now. My last X2 3800 lasted 2.5 years while this poor thing hasn't even been running for a year. I'm hoping to hold off until Deneb and Nehalem to make another jump. Nothing out right now would give you a noticable gaming performance increase from where you are.

General rule is spend the same money on your CPU that you did on the GPU. and Vise verse. Smarter people then i came up with that guideline.

Could I take this a step further and say that if you spend $400 on a GPU but $189 on CPU, it would be ok as long as you can OC your CPU to the performance level of a CPU that costs $400 or more?

In which case I should keep my 6750? I've just been looking at all the responses in here and it sounds like I'm not going to notice a huge difference between the 2 cpu's.

Don't do it -- not worth the money. Your E6750 at that speed with 4M cache shouldn't bottleneck a top end card any. It would be different if you were running an E2180 which only has 1M cache at 2.8ghz, but not with your chip and OC.

And I hope you're planning on gaming at 19 x 12 if you are thinking of buying a 4870x2 or GTX280...

+1 for the no vote.

You would get a more perceptible increase in speed for your uses from a hard drive upgrade. I'd grab a raptor 300gb for ~$250AR before doing the CPU upgrade on that machine. This assumes that you don't already have a very fast HD.

Lol! I'm just going to step up to a new GPU... Thinking the EVGA GTX 260 Core 216... Found it on Ebay for 292.99 w/free shipping and using MS Live cash it comes out to ~$220 plus FC2 and 3dMark Vantage free with registration. And I get to keep my gt for Physx if it ever comes into play and I will have 90 days for step up via evga.

What do you think about that?

Nice, thank you. I'm happy with the e6750 and I just got my GTX 260 core 216 for $232 AR/MS Live CB! So I'm excited for that.:)

Yeah, a CPU upgrade wasn't the best thing to do. Unless you just wanted to do it for the hell of it.

I upgraded to an e8400 after owning an e2180 for a while. That's a different situation. The extra mhz and cache makes a noticable difference in what I use my computer for: gaming, encoding xvid.

Obvious as hell those numbers are rubbish. Or typos. An e6750 @ 2.6ghz outperforms an e8500 @ 4ghz? Yeah right. Trusted reviews, eh?
