E6750 or Penryn

Well, for Christmas, I have two choices:

Buy an E6750 with a DS3L
Or
Buy a similarly priced Penryn with a DS3L when the Penryn comes out...

What does the Penryn have over the E6750? When will it come out? Thanks.

Penryn will run cooler than current generation chips (should overclock better), will have more on-chip cache for improved performance (6MB versus 4MB for the dual cores), and should be slightly cheaper (at least, once the initial buying frenzy is over).

Models available & pricing

If this is accurate you will be able to get a 3GHz/6MB chip for about the same price as the current e6750. And it should be able to OC even higher, lots of initial reports have Penryn chips hitting 4GHz on air. (Link Note: this is a QUAD here!)

Wait for Penryn.

I'm in the same boat, or similarly.

Right now I already have my GA-X38-DQ6 running with a temporary CPU/Memory combo (E6600 and some Kingston DDR2 800Mhz), thanks to a friend of mine who didn't use his second non-server system. I like that temporary solution, but I wanted to go with Penryn in January or February (or maybe March, because I have read that Intel might have delayed their Quad Core Penryns until March, however the Dual Core Penryns won't be delayed).

If I hadn't had the chance to get the temporary CPU and Memory, I would have waited and kept my system from my sig, definitely. I wanted to go with a Q9300 or maybe Q9450 depending on my financial capabilities when the day of release arrive. It would be a little dumb to go with anything else than Wolfdale (Dual Core Penryns) or Yorkfield (Quad Core Penryns) right now. It's just looming right at the corner, I mean two months of wait isn't a lot, it'll go by fast especially if you have a job (we all know that working helps burn time, you often don't see weeks and months pass by).

Be patient my friend, good things come to those who know patience. I know how tempting it is. I myself would like to just call my friend, tell him I want to give back his stuff and go buy some Q6600 G0 and Corsair Memory right now, and I do mean this very day as I type this line. I could do it if I really wanted to, but I won't, I would just regret it when February comes, and I would tell myself "dammit ... it happened so fast, the Q9300 is already there and now I can't buy it anymore", nah, no way I would accept such a defeat.

It really depends on where you are today. I have an e6400 @ 3GHz so I have absolutely no intentions of upgrading to Penryn until probably late next year when this cpu begins to hold me back a little. At that point I'll go with a cheap (probably $150-200) Penryn quad drop-in and be done with the system for another 2 years.

I tend to alternate cpu and gpu upgrades. My next item will be one of the high end next gen cards from nVidia when launched, probably sometime around March. Or if I really need more power for something I will just pick up a bargain 8800GT/3870 once the price spike has settled down.

I'll probably end up getting an E8400 myself, hopefully if it ends up roughly the same as what current E6750 prices are (or a little bit more). Not long to go to wait for 45nm goodness, so worth holding on and getting that. I'll probably end up getting the same DS3L board - what kind of FSB can they handle safely?
